Shared server host for gforum?

Shared server host for gforum?
Hi folks,
I bought a license for Gossamer Forum and had them install it for me.
They tell me they are having a very rough time with the install because my host (http://www.pair.com) has too many server restrictions.

I am a low traffic non-commercial site so I can't afford a very expensive host. Pair is $32 a month.

Just wondering if anyone has a host recommendation that would be a good place for me to run my Links 2.0/Gossamer Forum site?

Thanks

Well you can host with me I am hosting sites for others.Do you have any Ideas on what you need.

I can do right now 400megs 5 gigs data amonth for 35.00 per month and you only get billed each month. I am working on smaller packages but they won't be ready for a bit. I am workin on a whole new look also. Do you need a static IP or can it be shared. If so I have a package that when I get it up will be 19.95 per month shared with mail, cgi, Mysql, ftp, contrab, php, frontpage, etc and 1gig amonth.

Let me know

Competitive prices (less than what you are paying), really good server resources, and excellent/responsive technical support.

For more info on hosting companies, check out http://www.hostglobal.com.

The Business Unix Hosting (http://www.hostcentric.com/...sting/SharedUnix.asp) looks good.

V Silly is switching because her current host (Pair.com) is extremely restrictive on server usage (I'm not sure what they're limiting, cpu time a process can take, memory, etc). I was doing a Gossamer Forum install, and the installer kept on getting automatically killed. I must of run it about 10+ times before the installer finished uncompressing all the files Cool I don't see how the restrictions help the server!

Vicki, some things you'll want to ask when you get a new host:
Basics:
  • Custom cgi-bin w/ Perl
  • MySQL
  • The amount of space and bandwidth you'll need
  • Shell and FTP access

I can't really think of anything else right now :)

For extra Gossamer Forum features you'll want:
  • Ability to add to crontab (for subscription emails)
  • ReWrite rules (for search_engine templates)

Anyone have anything to add to the list?

Right...and Hostcentric offers all that. It is a really good hosting company (been with Web2010, which was acquired by Hostcentric since 1997).

I am running Links SQL v.1.13 with many applications/add-ons (including a custom forum, job/resume posting, links directory - with reviews, site ratings, recommendations, etc., and user management center), and there has been limited problems with CPU usage, memory, etc. I also run MySQLMan on that server account. I also run custom MySQL/Perl scripts and they don't conflict at all.

Also, Hostcentric offers PHP3 (I believe they have upgraded to PHP4 on some of their servers).

I tried to send you a pm but you have them switched off.

I can offer you space on my server which is likely to be quicker than most servers you get with other hosting companies as it is pretty new and doesn't have 200+ sites squeezed on it.

I can give you 5GB bandwidth, 400MB, all the usual stuff like perl/php, mysql for $30/month and extra bandwidth is $4 per GB.

    Yes to all.
