Gforum as an email discussion list with moderation

Gforum as an email discussion list with moderation
My apologies if this has already been discussed. I searched and couldn't find an answer.

We currently run several email-based discussion groups that allow our subscribers to receive mail as it is sent to the list in individual emails or in a digest format. Some of our lists are moderated by a list manager to keep the conversation on a high level and free of advertising. These are typical listserv-type discussion lists.

Can Gforum be used to replace these email-based listserve's? If so how? What do we need to make this happen? Thanks in advance for your help. If we can use Gforum for this purpose we can replace a $650/month hosting service (so yes we are willing to pay someone for custom work if necessary).

Regards,

Richard

GF is a Forum, mainly. It has Mailing List features (you can email all your users an such, but it was not intended to be used primaraly as a ML. Now, if you are planning on using it for Mailing List archiving, that could be what you are looking for. To be use as a ML, you are better off with something else. IMHO.

Right now I am in the process of modying the templates needed to be used 'only' as a ML archiver. For that, GF _is_ what I was looking for.

Thanks for the response.Smile I know that GF can be set up to send digest mail from the days posts to all subscribers who chose that option at signup. If it can do this, then it should be able to accept posts via email from a special POP email address on the server. This would then allow GF to act as an archive like you want it to but would also be able to act as a mail list. Does anyone know how to do this or can someone from Gossamer tell me if it is possible with custom coding?

As unixman said, the MailArc plugin is more for mailing list archiving purposes. You would be best off installing a mailing list program (for *nix, majardomo is a popular choice), and using Gossamer Forum with the MailArc plugin to create an archive of these messages.

I understood what he was saying. I was just hoping that someone -- even the staff -- could come up with a way to do this using Gforum without a MajorDomo-type program. We are willing to pay for the extra programming. But since you are from Gossamer I will assume I hit a dead end.Unsure

Thanks anyway to all for your help.

If it's for low volume, then we could build something for you, but if you need high volume (say more then 100 posts to the list a day and 100 users), then you really need to be tightly integrated into the mail server. It would be much cheaper to install a mailing list program then to try and make Gossamer Forum do this.

Alex,

Thanks for the reply. We push 1.5 million emails through the server a year. I will assume something tightly integrated will be our answer. I'll let you know if we find some solution.

Hi,

I would consider looking at something like ezmlm for qmail (http://www.ezmlm.org). The site seems to be down right now, but try http://cr.yp.to/ezmlm.html as well.

Cheers,

Alex

I thought you guys were currently working on this feature, whereby participants could receive and respond to posts in a forum via email? Something like eGroups. What's the deal?
