How are inline images handled?

How are inline images handled?
Question about images placed into messages as opposed to attachments. Are they handled the same, i.e., stored in the web server images directory or they loaded from the web URL?

If you paste into the advanced editor or use an image markup tag then they are pulled from the remote url. Uploads are the only images on GT's server.

In that case, is there a way to make an upload an inline image as opposed to an attachment?
