Few questions
Right now I am using Vbulletin, and am thinking about switching to another forum like Phorum. Members of our current forum do not like the boxed in feeling and would like it if you could see all messages and threads, yours does this.

Also I am looking for a forum that would let you make the postings search engine friendly, for instance using mod rewrite to do this.

Also I am looking for the capability to let out members post directly via email rather than the forum.

Phorum has all these features, but does not have import support for Vbulletin.

How do you think your new forum addrsses there areas.

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary,

I'm afraid we don't have everything you need yet, but will do soon. Our forum is threaded, and completely template based, so you can change the look to make it work the way your users want.

We are working on a mod_rewrite solution, and it should just be a matter of changing the templates. We will put it live on Gossamer (as we have 100,000+ posts that we'd love search engines to index).

No post via email yet, but it is one of the plugins we have planned.

Hope that helps,

Alex

Can someone explains to me how using mod_rewrite would make the forum search engine friendly? Is that to do with not indexing long URls and scripts with long path information?

Is that a case of supplying the search engine with a url, say of:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/forum/post/45677

and then the mod_rewrite would rewrite that URL to the correct url? Are we talking about making URLs more friendly?

Cheers

Hi,

Exactly. We would do it a bit different and aim it at search engines, not at user friendly scripts and make sure as much info is in the url as possible. The script would output:

http://gossamer-threads.com/forum/Gossamer_Forum/Question_Comments_and_Suggestions/Few_Questions_169145.html

mod_rewrite would change that to

http://gossamer-threads.com/perl/gforum/gforum.cgi?post=169145

internally.

Cheers,

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the informative reply. I have no doubt that you will add all those features in time to the forum.

All that is stopping me right now from upgrading is an importer for vbulletin board.

When might something like this be available?

Thanks,

Gary

That's on my todo list right after I'm done with the UBB Import.

I thought that search engines do not list URL's containing question marks?

Google does.

....and the point of a re-write is to fool those that don't.
