BUG - Search feature seriously hosed
Jason,

The search in 1.1.8, for my Win2K/SQL2000 installation, is seriously broken. Search selected options appear not to apply (i.e., restrict search to given parameters).

Any chance of a fix before 2.0.0 ?

Is that the search box at your site linked in your signature?

They seemed to work when I just tested.

Try the following experiments:

1. Select a forum to search within. Select a search term, I was searching for an old post with the word "reclaimed" as an example.

When I try, I get results from all forums.

2. Or try to search for the term "MACR", but only in posts made by "Scott Burris".

I get results from all users. Crazy

3. Or try searching for term "reclaimed" but only within the last 24 hours.

Again all results are returned.

The only thing I can think of is they missed something in 1.1.8 for SQL2000 and Full Text Searching.

Search works fine, as far as I can tell, in the G Forum installation here.

Hi Scott,

Are you using the MS SQL indexing scheme for the post table?

Yes I am. I also checked with enterprise manager and it offers the following details for gforum_Post_ctlg

Item count: 24338

Catalog size: 9mb

Unique key count: 113982

Last population date (and this intrigues me): 5/2/2002

Hi Scott,

I'm not sure why the MS SQL indexing isn't working - try giving the INTERNAL indexing a shot. We've had good results with it (this for uses it, for example). However, the MS SQL indexing should be working - I'll get the programmer responsible for the SQL indexing code to take a look at it.

On my hosted plan, the resources required to do the initial index would take a day or so to finish.

I'll wait on a fix, the search at least searches...it just doesn't discriminate.

Can you try rebuilding the catalog:

To rebuild a full-text catalog
  1. Expand a server group, and then expand a server.

  2. Expand Databases, and then expand the database that contains the full-text catalog to rebuild.

  3. Click Full-Text Catalogs, and then right-click the specific catalog to rebuild.

  4. Select Rebuild Catalog.

  5. Click Yes to rebuild the catalog.

Hi,

Can you send an email to support-gforum@gossamer-threads.com with admin area info (and FTP if you can't edit the .pm files through FileMan) and we'll get this fixed up.

Cheers,

Alex

Alex,

I also seem to have aproblem with my search. This may be due to migrating from WWWThreads to GForum. Doing a search for the word "complexity" in all my forums looking at "all posts" returns 7 results which does NOT include this post:

http://www.dropzone.com/...i?post=116819#116819

I've tried to Reindex my DB - not sure if this is the correct thing to do - but it seems to time out before finishing most of the time. Users are asking about this as well. Any way I can Index my entire forums to make sure all posts from the past are searchable?

Safe swoops

Hi Sangiro,

Do you have shell access? If so, you can run

perl ./tools/reindex.pl

from within the admin directory - it will reindex the post table. You could also try running it through fileman, selecting the "Long-Running" option - but I'm not entirely sure if that will avoid the timeout problems.
