Im a bit confused by the [parent] thing :) ....only seems to take you to the post above your own.

Yes. "Parent" is a temporary word, until we can find some better way to put the link. We're looking for some sort of word that everyone will understand to mean the parent.

WWWThreads has a "Re: Username" link to the right of the subject, but we already _have_ a "Re: [username]" in the subject. The problem with linking that is demonstrated in this post - it isn't always there.

I'm definately open to any suggestions anyone may have.

Uh. Don't allow people to edit the subject of replied messages? Or Maybe, you can edit, but the Re: [jagerman] will get appended on afterwards. Or before, in fact...

Actually, why not make the whole thing clickable? Maybe the Re: [jagerman] Regarding RedRum's post "Attachment test" should all be clickable?

The [url=parent]Re: [jagerman][/url] part should be locked and not shown in the post reply window. It should be added after the post it made. The Regarding RedRum's post "Attachment test" can be edited as you wish.

It should be:

[url=parent]Re: User[/url] Subject.

The subject should be editable. The Re: User part should be added in after the post is made and non-editable. It should be clickable to the parent message.

My point was that it should be possible to change the subject of a thread at some point during the thread, without having to use the Re: [username].

Alternatively, my reply might be aimed at numerous people, in which case I might not want to include [Wil] in there.

I suppose what could happen is that the "Re:" is linked if it is there - otherwise there isn't a link. That way if someone changes the topic completely and leaves off the "Re: [username]" bit, it won't be linked. This could be seen as a feature .

finally understand what this thread is really about.

I'd like to be able to lop of the [username] part since 1.) I use only flatview and 2.) since sometimes I refer to several people in 1 post.

Thanks to the chit-chat area I'm up around the 600 messages but if I spent time replying individually I'd have way more than 600 posts, ( no where near like Paul but at least I'm staying close albiet minus 1 digiti ) so what Im saying is that being able to refer to several people at one time is pretty convenient and would be nice to have !

You can lop it off now. The 'Re: [username]' is merely a default suggestion that shows up for the message - you can put whatever you want there.

After all, the reason we have threaded message boards is to keep messages grouped and cross-linked/referenced.

Hmm. I don't know on this one... I don't have any suggestions of my own, but I'm not sure what you're suggesting will work.

Maybe get the same format at usenet, as in message envelope headers. "In-reply-to: #23840" somewhere? Maybe make this a viewable option in the display preferences?

If you stuck to displaying the message number, it would elimenate the headache of the name problem and the subject problem?

It's not ugly with usenet, email and whatever else systme uses it.

Names will still be there. It will just be an extra line (if people are really worrited about seeing it there).
