users have different rights for different tables

users have different rights for different tables
Hi,

If I understand the system correctly, there are two options for creating userlists:
  • create a new userlist for each table, you can give users different rights on all tables, but you have to copy the user definitions for each table

  • create one userlist that all tables use, the rights will be the same for all tables

I want one user list to have different rights for different tables. Unsure I guess I can implement this is two different ways:
  • make different lists and write a script that propagates changes from one list to all other lists?

  • keep one list, and write a plugin that reads the access rights from my own table and changes the setting accordingly for each request.

  • modify the GT code, but this seems a lot of work and I will have the risk of not being able to upgrade...

Does anyone have any experience or and suggestion about which way would be the easiest to implement and maintain?

Thanks, Jasper

Hi,

I just noticed that the session key is stored in a userlist specific table. I guess this implies that the proposed option:

is not possible when users want to switch from one table to another. Frown Is that true, or am I missng something?

Hi Jasper,

Did you ever come up with a solution for this? I know this would be an extremely useful feature for a lot of people (myself included). Just curious to see if/how you solved the problem.

Thanks.

Frown Drag ... was told by theStone to look in the forum for answers to this issue... and the only thing I found touching it was this thread. Ie there is no good solve to user admin issues for different databases. I was hoping that someone had found a great way to merge the GT Forum user system - which I believe has much of the functionality we are requesting. Though far from what I'd imagine configuring as a newbie to SQL etc.

I would suggest another way to solve it to the ones mentioned - to setup User Groups. Then standards can be defined for more users at the time which will be useful. That ... btw.... is one feature they should include in multiuser FileMan as well.

In addition to this ... the user database is completely open - so that it seems to me that any user with view permission guessing the name of the user table will be able to view all passwords.

hm... well I might sound a bit moody here but I was a bit disappointed by this script. Wondering if it wouldn't have been better to have bought an additional Links SQL license and tweaked that one down to use for database purposes.
