500 Internal Server Error
Hi,

This is what I get when I try to install this program:

Quote:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@flashygaits.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.34 Server at www.flashygaits.com Port 80

I have tried installing DBMan about 50 times now, and I do everything that this [ http://www.jpdeni.com/dbman/tutorial2.html ] tutorial has told me to do, plus everything that the ReadMe.txt has told me to. I have made sure (50 times) that it is uploaded in ASCII form, and I have CHMOD all the files. Still no go. I changed the perl location to what my server ( netrillium ) has told me to, and still nothing. I had this installed about a year ago and it worked great, but then I had to uninstall it when I thought I didn't need it anymore. However... I do. Its really frusterating because I have done EVERYTHING and NOTHING works. This is what I have in the code:

Hmmmm. Are you sure you have the path to Perl set correctly?

It should start with #! and not have a ; at the end of the line.

If that's correct, I would try installing the demo to see if that works. That'll tell you whether the problem is with your configuration or something else.

Thats what I have at the top of the db.cgi file. That is the location of Netrillium's Perl.

Here is what my db.cgi file looks like:

The syntax of your db.cgi file seems to be okay. There were no errors.

Did you install the demo? How did that work out for you?

The demo? Do you mean before I changed anything? I'm not sure what you mean by demo.

Re: [flashygaits] 500 Internal Server Error In reply to
The "out of the package" DBMan with the original .cfg file and html.pl file. Just change the $db_dir_url in the .cfg file. Don't even change the path to perl at first. See if it works. If it doesn't, change the path to perl and see if that works.

We know for certain that the DBMan as distributed doesn't have any mistakes in it that would cause a 500 error, so the best thing to do is to start from there. If that doesn't work, then the problems can only be:
1-- one or more files uploaded in binary mode
2-- one or more files with the wrong permissions
3-- your server doesn't have the capacity to run the script.

It really has to be one of those three problems, if the demo doesn't run. There are no other possibilities that I can think of. (I'm sure someone will come along with another one. :-) )

Hmmmm. Just a thought, which would be within the "server not having capacity" category. Are you sure you can run cgi scripts from that directory? Often cgi scripts can only be run from a cgi-bin or another directory that has script-running turned on.

I have ran this code before on my domain and it worked fine. Last time I had it installed in http://database.flashygaits.com which is where I originally wanted to put it but it didn't work. I have made sure that it was uploaded in the ASCII format, I have triple checked it was CHMOD correctly, and I have tried running it in both the cgi-bin and the regular subdomain. It really shouldn't have a problem running since, like I said, I have used it before and it worked wonderfully.

I'm really out of ideas, then. I tested your .cfg file and your db.cgi file for sytax errors and couldn't find any. The only other places that could have syntax errors are auth.pl and html.pl. If you want me to test them, it would be better to upload them as attachments, rather than posting them. But you say that they can't be the problem because you've used it before.

One last thing I would try, even though you've done it 50 times already... Delete all the files you have in your directory and upload them in ascii mode one more time and set the permissions.

You might try searching for 500 error here in the forum to see if there are any other posts that might give you an idea. There could be something that I've forgotten that could cause it.

Just a shot in the dark... but did you chmod the directory/folder you created? Set the permissions on the directory to 755 (rwx-rx-rx).

Also try uploading a simple script and see if it works

-------copy below here------- "showroot.cgi"
#!/usr/bin/perl
print "content-type: text/html\n\nRoot=$ENV{'DOCUMENT_ROOT'}";
exit;
-------copy above here-------

Copy those 3 lines and save as ASCII file, upload ASCII mode to "cgi-bin", and set permissions to 755. Then call it up,

That didn't work either, I even got the 500 Internal Error Code with that. Do you think its my FTP Program? I have ASCII checked, and I do CHMOD.

I switched domains to see if it would work with the same settings, and it did. Must be the domain I am putting it on? Maybe they banned this cgi code or something *shrugs* weird that it worked a year ago and not now. Thanks for all the help guys!

I'd suggest seeing if you can get some support from your web host. Maybe they've changed something, like you need to have a cgi-bin now.

Could be, but I tried them in the cgi-bin and the regular directory (http://database.flashygaits.com) and (http://database.flashygaits.com/cgi-bin/) and neither had worked.

I noticed a similar problem on my install. After checking my working counter cgi, i noticed this change on the perl line:

Standard
#!/usr/bin/perl

Working
#!/usr/bin/perl -i

I added the ' -i' to db.cgi and it worked fine.

Hope this helps.
