Boolean 'and' keyword search

Boolean 'and' keyword search
How do I do a boolean 'and' query for a keyword search?

For example, three records might contain the following phrases:

Rough lumber.
Rough and sawn lumber.
Lumber: rough, planed and sawn.

I want to do a keyword search for "rough and lumber" and hit all three records.

Note that this is not a one-field search, but a keyword search across all fields. If I keyword search for 'rough lumber' or 'lumber rough' it looks for the phrase. I can do an 'or' search by using 'rough|lumber' as an RE, full word search. But I want "rough and lumber"....

There is a few mods in the resource center .. one called "Boolean Search MOD" which you might find useful.

There are also several thread references in the FAQ noted below under "Searching" which may help you to find a solution.

Thanks, but I've been through the FAQ without finding an answer to performing an 'and' query, and the link to the Boolean mod -- http://leisurelee.net/boolean.html -- is dead.

Yes it does appear that the link to the mod is not working.

You might want to search the forums for "boolean" or by leisurelee and get the mod and any updates from the forum threads. You might also want to write to lee and see if there is a new url for the mod.

Try the following address:

Fortunately Google does cache all the pages they index...

I am also looking for a boolean search option; however, I do want this boolean option to be specific for a given textfield.
Is it possible to use the boolean mod in such a way or is it only good for a keyword search?

Thanx in advance

Thank you! Now why didn't I think of that...

Installed and working...great. But it doesn't do a boolean 'and' keyword search across all fields. What I mean is, for a search to be successfully the terms must all be found in the same field.

Hello drobbins, sorry the mod didn't work for you.

:-) Guess your response helps in answering deppix's question.

Didn't mean to imply the mod doesn't work... it does! And it's *very* close to what I wanted. As I said the only problem is doing a multiple keyword search across all fields. Say I look for "construction contracting", boolean 'and'. Using the mod the search is perfect for all records with "construction" and "contracting" in the *same* field. But it doesn't find records with "construction" in one field and "contracting" in another field.

I conclude either (a) I'm asking to much :-) or (b) my database structure needs works.

If anyone would like to have a look at my little project it's at http://www.labradorstraits.nf.ca/lbdb.shtml It's very preliminary -- not 'announced' or linked to from anywhere.

If there are particular files anyone would like available for viewing outside the cgi-bin let me know -- though I'm gone today for a week on work: http://www.vikingsymposium.nf.ca which has nothing to do with databases :-)
