Problem accessing forums...
Anyone having any problems accessing the forums? I can't seem to access the forum from home anymore. I get a DNS error and even when I try to send an email to support@gossamer-threads.com it gets bounced back - "Domain does not exist".

I can access fine from work - but not at home anymore - it started about 4 days ago.

Nope...not me.

I would recommend doing a tracert and see where the connection is dropping...Then contact your ISP.

GT had DNS problems a few days ago.

Sometimes bad data still propagates.

Some routers still only update DNS once a week, which is really bad.

Hopefully the problem will go away in a few days.

If you are on a windows machine, try rebooting it from cold. Especially with a dedicated connection (like DSL or cable) that will clear out windows bad cache.

WRONG answer. Has nothing to do with my ISP or otherwise...One day (for over a year I can access gossamer-threads.com just fine)then all of a sudden I can't even ping gossamer-threads.com much less access them from the web...They have definitely had peering/DNS issues for the past few days...AND I'm not the only one...As you have said in the past "GET with the Program".

I disagree. Look at TCP/IP and DNS connectivity issues! Mad

Look again yourself my friend...You obviously don't have a handle on this...The rest of the web is just fine but all of sudden for 3 1/2 days I can't even ping gossamer-threads.com and look at some of the other responses as well...for that matter ask JP how many emails she got asking the same thing....Hello!

Again, I disagree...do you know anything about TCP/IP and DNS??? Your comments do not fully illustrate an understanding of WAN networks...and when did we ever classify a friendship! Mad

While no expert am I, your comments illustrate that I know a little bit more than you do Anthro...In the light of your responses to the obvious I will not continue - I rest my case...

Never!...Just trying to be polite - which I now feel is out of the question...

Re: Problem accessing forums... In reply to
Look, the issue is _not_ GT. It's a router between you and them, possibly your ISP, possibly one further upstream. It could _even_ be the cache in your computer.

Until that router -- or cache -- is updated, the domain "doesn't exist" in that pathway, and there is no way to get by that.

You can log on through a different ISP/connection or even possibly a different node and you'll be able to connect.

The DNS problem was about 1 day, but it propagated the next day, and may take up to a week, or even more, to get filtered out by all routers.

If you can obtain the IP address of gossamer-threads.com then it's NOT your local DNS server. It could still be a router at your ISP or carrier.

Hi,

I agree with Bearwithme. That was not an ISP issue.
At first I thought it was, after the site was having
trouble coming up on my laptop. But while I was at the
library that same day, the site would not come up either.

I received an error message that the host is not responding.
Now, I know for a fact that my ISP (AOL) is not used at a
public library.

Also, when Bearwithme said "my friend", anthrorules, that
was a figure of speech, not an actual statement. I am 15
and know that.

Ok, but you too, miss the point.

If the site is _slow_, that's a GT problem, or a problem with their connection, and it's been mostly fixed.

Last week there was a different problem -- one where the IP/Host -- "Not Found" or "No DNS" message was coming up.

I could not connect from my home, using my DSL line, but I could through my dial up. (Same ISP). It was a router table problem, due to a DNS error that happened.

It really is fixed, I'm keeping my eye on it ;) And I use several different paths to connect to GT, and I do it at all times of the day and night.

Talking about this is getting tempers hot, and there is no reason.

If you are having problems connecting to the server, do a tracert, or better yet, a sequential ping (using a program like Ping Plotter). A sequential ping will show you where in the path the problem is. If it's in the middle, between to different carries, it's a border router problem, and they are very, very common and take quite awhile for resolution -- usually > 24hours.

Re: Problem accessing forums... In reply to
Ok, the problem was someone made a change to the DNS and messed up and affected the gossamer-threads.com dns entry. To make matters worse the time to live was set way to high and so the changes have stuck for 1 week. Almost all DNS caches should have reset back to the proper values by now, if not, not more then 1 day more I would imagine.

The problem was started on our end, and there is really not much you can do. Your only choice is to use a different DNS server that has the correct value until your ISP's DNS refreshes itself.

I'm sorry about the headaches. And please, lets keep thing civil.

Cheers,

Alex
