2kSearch???
Not sure where I should have put this, but it didn't really fit into the Perl, CGI, SQL and more! category Frown

Ok, I have a weird thing going on with my browser! I am using IE 5.5, and whenever I get a URL that is not found, it goes to 2ksearch.com. Is this just specific to my computer, or does good ol' M$ have an affiliation with them?

Just wanna get some input into it, and if it can be fixed, change it to another site Wink

Thanks

Andy

Consider yourself lucky. If I don't type www. infront of every URL with AOL it takes me to MSN and microsoft.com opens a stupid AOL popup for Microsoft.

Thats why I switched to a cable modem so I only open AOL via TCP/IP to check my email.

Just some sly attempt to get more hits at their site...they are not trying to be helpful at all.

Yeah, suppose I am Smile I was trying to get on ADSL, but bloomin' BT havn't updated the local phone exchange to let me get access to it! 90% (or so they say) of the country has access to it, but just not me Frown typical, huh?

Don't get ADSL with BT. It's about £10000000000000/month

You need to check out NTL. Only £25/month for 512 kbps (about 70k/s)....they are looking at upgrading that to 1 mbps.

Its so cool.....and can break through that limit sometimes. For example I downloaded the whole of the dmoz content file (uncompressed at 832MB) at 300 k/s and it took about 30 mins. That would have taken about 50 years with a 56k

Yeah, exactly my reason for wanting to upgrade Wink I get like 33bps on my good ol' 56k v90 modem with BT. Last time I looked the setup fees for ADSL to your house was waaaay high! Like £200 (only takes em less than 45 mins to do...lol).

I may look into NTL. Only prob is that you need to be in their excahnge area for it to work, cos ADSL uses like mini dishes on your ariel (or so I've been told Wink)

ADSL works through your existing phone line I think. They just set it up at the exchange and then come and configure it at your house. (not sure it has anything to do with minidishes in your aerials...lol)

Have you tried clicking on...

Tools
Options
Internet Options
Advanced (tab)
Scroll down and uncheck 'Show Friendly HTTP Error Messages'

That might do the trick.

Hmm says it done with radio signals...probably a bit like the satellite method....well probably not actually...lol.

I never trust companies I haven't heard of and haven't seen adverts for or who charge £40/month Smile

Yup, I'll just have to wait til BT drop their prices, or NTL offer it in my area...lol....dont think it will be in the near future though, as I live in a small village of about 1-2,000 people, so I'm not sure if they would bother with us yet... (something to do with the demand for it I should imagine).

Oh well, I'll just wait...Cool

Wil,

unfortunately, that doesn't do the trick. These stupid search directories will still show up. Nasty thing!

It wouldn't bother me so much if the URL did not actually exist but it just annoys me that typing gossamer-threads.com will take me to msn even though the url is correct.

I mean, they can get the address bar to automatically insert http:// so I'm sure that they can get it to insert www. also. But even the www. doesn't need to be there most times.

Also, many of these "friendly pages" have recurring pop-ups. How pathetic.

I don't understand this guys, sorry. Are you using some customized version of IE or something? Maybe something that came with a specific ISP?

If I enter a few words into the Address bar and it does not match an address in my History file then it will take me to the MSN search page.

Not sure I understand how you got this 2k thingy?

I use IE5.5 which takes me to MSN - I had IE6 installed for a while but it still took me to MSN.

Just need to test with WinXP (which comes with IE6).

have you tried going in the registry? I go in basically every day, looking at the way things work.
try looking at
HKEY_USERS/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/Internet Explorer/Main
there should be stuff like
Default_Search_url
Search Url
or Search Page
or you can try
HKEY_USERS/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/Internet Explorer/Search
or
HKEY_USERS/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/Internet Explorer/Search Url

I'm not totally sure if this will work because i rarely have this happen and i don't remember what place it goes to, but i know its on msn. something like autosearch.msn.com.
btw, you know how the top title bar looks like this (*page* title) - Microsoft Internet Explorer
if you don't know already, you can change the Microsoft part by going into the first reg path i told you and edit string "Window Title"

oh btw, i found that you don't have to do all that registry stuff, if you don't want any searching at all, you can go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and under Search from address bar, select Do not search from address bar. This works for ie6

And to get to your "registry"...

Type in regedit in the Run --> Open option from your Start button.

BTW: Using regedit is a dangerous tool and should only be used in extreme cases. Playing around with editing keys/strings can cause major problems in your operating system if you don't know what you are doing.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE MAKING CHANGES.

Anthrorules is right. I only do it, because my internet explorer has failed many times, and eventually over the years, i looked into the registry. But like i said you can easily shut off the searching via internet options.

That didn't work for me........I don't have:

HKEY_USERS/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/Internet Explorer/Main

However under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/InternetSettings

I found that you can change your USER_AGENT (you know like, Mozilla/4.0 (compatible, MSIE 5.0; Win32))

SO I tweaked it a bit Smile

........and under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/InternetExplorer

......were lots of goodies too. (Especially under "Main" as you can change TONS of cool stuff.
