if your computer and connection are too weak to import, are you sure it is sufficient to run it?

I'm assuming you mean to import this into Links SQL.

I've thought about this issue for awhile, and while GT is in the perfect position to offer this service, it would take probably a new machine and staff person to offer it.

It would involve importing the database on a monthly cycle, then using the power of MySQL and perl, to create dump-files of the various sections or customized dumps for people.

I can actually visualize a way for this to happen in a fairly easy, but inelegant fashion.

I hesitate, because Alex/GT can make this service available, and with their experience with RDF might be able to make it better than I could ever find the time to do.

But, I can schedule a "test window" for, lets say 2 weeks. If there are enough people who want cuts from the database, to make it worth my time/effort, I'll give it a shot. What this means, is enough people to make it so that the cost of a cut would be in the $50-150 range, depending how big your cut was. Either post your "wish list" here or email it to me if you'd like it private. If enough people jump on this, I'll do it, at least once -- or try to. If successful, I could turn it into a plug-in, that would install the cut and update it on a regular basis.

There are a few problems that would need to be overcome, but in all the stuff I have on the table, I think I see my way clear of them, logically, and the trick would be implementing it ie: tagging links to categories, then importing them into a variety of variable layouts. Not impossible, and not even terribly difficult, _IF_ the database was already imported into a MySQL/SQL database before cutting.

BTW... At an estimated 10-14 hours of CPU/computer time, and a variable amout of human time, plus the port to your system and installation of the database, you are looking at a minimum of something in the order of $500-$1500 in costs (maybe more). That's why I'm curious if there are enough people to divide the costs up over, the price could be a _reasonable_ monthly recurring fee type thing, or a one time deal.

I'm curious what people think.

Such a service will be greatly appreciated from a lot of people.
As pugdog said it is goning to be a lot cheaper to have more than one person so the cost will be divided..
$1500 man.......! Does it come with the machine :) kidding

I would love to see GT input on this .
i will personally have the Regional/Countries cut if the price is reasonable

Problem is "time". Once cut, it has to be packaged in a form that will allow it to be easily imported into a remote server. This would usually require a script, rather than a direct import.

So, by dividing it up, the time is shared, and each person only pays a portion of the actual time required to create the dumps.

And, the machine I'm doing it on, even at todays prices, is at least 4.5-5k, and was 7+k when installed 2 years ago. That import will take up a good portion of that machine for a half day or more. That's a lot of "cost" when you look at it. Then there is the time to create the individual cuts, and package the dumps, etc.

I can see this as a useful service, and I've touched upon it over the past year or so, but it's very possible now, as long as there is enough interest to make it work -- from a financial point of view. It's a lot of "time" to do it all. both computer time and human time. That is expensive.

I do understand that pugdog, you time and services are appreciated.
If we can get the price down -by a shared group- to a reasonable one I will be among the first to use your service and i am sure 10's will follow.
Good luck

I will do it for you - make me an offer via pm or email.

Remember it will take a LONG time as you want a category that is near the end of the list.
