Hmmmm, interesting question...

I think everyone will have a slightly different idea of just what constitutes a "programmer", but I think I'd have to say someone who programs as their primary job.

(I think "AR" meant "AnthroRules")

Yeah I suppose you're right.

But I'm sure there are some perl guru's about who have a job unrelated to perl (or maybe not?) and surely they constitute as programmers?

I'm trying to think of an example of someone......um.......I can't Frown

Yeah I assumed it meant Eliot but wanted to check - I got a pm to confirm it.....lol

Re: Question In reply to
I wouldn't say that being a "professional" would qualify you as a programmer. Take for example John Carmack (Lead programmer at ID Software), he was programming some simple game engines long before he was hired anywhere. I do think the best programmers are the ones who have wide range of languages and experiences under their belts (excluding VB, Smile).

Re: Question In reply to
Surely a programmer is someone who writes or deals with programming language in some way or other.

There aren't any set rules about your level of competence before you can call yourself a programmer.

Now, a more interesting question would be 'When can you call yourself a good programmer? ;-)

I'd say you're good programmer when you can write a couple of sub routines, execute the script, and not get a 500...hehe (joking)
