How to check out a host please?
Anyone any idea how to check out a webhosts connections to the internet, i.e. who they peer with, have connections to, etc. I know you can get this info from RIPE but I have no idea how. This is for a UK dedicated server host I am considering.

Thanks

Ask them.

If you can't trust them to give you an honest answer, then you shouldn't really want to host with them, should you?

Otherwise, check a traceroute to their main hosting site or one of their machine names or IP addresses if you have that information.

Remember that most hosting companies located at careier neutral exchanges peer with a number of uplinks so that your data will go through the best route possible at that time. So the information you see from traceroute may or may not change.

Also, you may want to check out the Internet Weather Report (don't have a link -- google it) and www.netcraft.net which monitors ISPs around the globe.

Another good idea is to go to a site like http://www.traceroute.org/ and do traceroute's to the host from different places around the globe. That will give you an idea of response times and network layout (i.e. do all connections go through the same uplink, chances are they only have one active uplink then).

Hope that helps,

Alex

Thanks Alex, traceroute.org is very useful, seems one host has one connection and is a reseller for one T3 provider and the other appears to have multiple T3 providers plus some peering links.

I also used samspade at http://samspade.org/t/ brings up all sorts of info.

Cheers all..
