"Messenger Service" popups - how to disable
i use NT and xp and get a number of those "Messenger Service" popups

here's how to disable that service

http://8help.ohio-state.edu/913.html

instructions from that page:

Quote:
Recently a tool has become available that makes it very easy to send SPAM and other messages directly to some Windows computer in the form of a "Messenger Service" Pop-up message.

Disabling this service in no way changes the functioning of MSN Instant Messenger.

To disable it in Windows XP:

Click on the "Start" button.
Right-Click on "My Computer"
Choose "Manage" from the menu that appears.
In the left column Highlight "Services and Applications"
In the right column Double-Click on "Services".
Double-Click on the service called "Messenger".
Click the "Stop" button to stop the service.
Change the "Startup Type:" to "Manual"
Click "Apply".
Click "OK".
Close "Computer Management"

The service should no longer accept those pop-up messages.

seems okay so far

Coincidentally I posted the method of disabling it a couple of days ago which you may have seen with a search.

In scanreg defense, I tried retrieving the Thread where you, Paul, posted those instructions, and spent quite a few minutes searching with various keywords and I could not locate it. So, I went out to Google and found the same resource that scanreg came across.

Thanks for posting the information, scanreg. It will help others.

Buh Bye!
