popup crap!

popup crap!
Is there a way someone can embed popup ads into your browser or something. I get popups no matter what site I visit. I've tried clearing my cache, cookies, etc. Even visiting these forums I get random popups. A lot of times they are the same ads as well... Mad

Tell me about it.

If you have XP or Kazaa installed then that is likely to be part of the problem :(

You can block them from C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts (can't remember the exact path)

That's not XP's fault, that's Ad software you've unwittingly downloaded like Gator and others.

Try using AdAware to scan your system and remove them.

Or just use another web browser.

That did it! I ran a scan and found something called "network essentials" installed. Apparently this is some sort of "smartpop" software. I don't know how I ended up with that piece of crap, but it's gone now! Unsure

Thanks for the suggestion!

When you visit dodgy website and click that box to "trust" content from their site.... well, don't do that again. ;-)

And, you should make sure your browser is up to date : windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Yeah, that may be what happened... I don't remember trusting anything, but it may have looked legit and I let it through. Doh! Crazy

XP (if you are using it) has it's own ad cache....AdWare should pick it up though.

c:\windows\system32\adcache

Hm... are you sure that's really Mircosoft's doing? I don't see anything in my system32 folder by that name...

Perhaps not. Seems a strange place for a 3rd party product to shove its ads though. Guess they are trying to hide them.

no, it's just as common for a few program files to end up there as they are in the "program files" directory. my system32 folder has stuff from Adobe, Macromedia, and Quicktime in it.

Great way to sell products, huh? By putting stupid ads on people's computers that they have a hard time removing. Duh, I think I'll run out and buy some of that! I don't think I would want my company name involved with advertising like that. Crazy

BTW: Did you ever get your email working? I've been trying to email you again.

I don't think we'll see popups much longer on legitimate sites. On porn sitess, maybe, but not on the mainstream sites.

A lot of bigger networks such as ask Jeeves has stopped showing popup ads and taking revenue for them. Yahoo! is inline to follow suite and so are a number of web portals including AOL. IE 7 will finally have some partial support to block popups -- it will dissalow popups to open up a full new window and stop pop behinds.

Still, just download Mozilla...
