How about, I delete your thread in the Links 2 forum, and Aki, or a GT member, deletes this one? It has nothing to do with the 'chat' forum...Pirate

There is no default password. You should of set up the administrative password during the Mac installation. Unless we're talking a BSD based machine here, which I presume follows the same installation steps.

You mention Darwin so I assume you're talking of Mac OS X or Jaguar more precisely? My installation screen asked me to choose a password for the Administrative account as one of the first few options. I doubt you can do this on a machine once it has been installed without knowing the original password to change.

I've never used darwin but I'd expect it is pretty much the same as any linux distribtution. During installation you are prompted to create an admin account near the end of the installation.

Have you gone through the installation process?

Like Wil and Paul posted. You setup it up upon install. I use regular OSX.

Darwin is just a port of BSD essentially.

If you have a CD image you might be able to set root and then go from there to erase theat user or edit that user's password.

One security flaw of OSX is that anybody with an install CD can reset root Wink

You'd have to have access to the cd-rom though right?

If so then you can do that with any OS - just do a format and a reinstall Wink

I think you're missing the point. Formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the OS would wipe all data which is effectively why you'd wish to hack into a machine -- to gather data and information.

If you've got access to the machine, you can boot of a floppy or a cd and get access to all the data on any o/s (unless you have an encrypted file system).

Yes, absolutely. But Paul said, and I quote "just do a format and a reinstall".

It looks to me to be rather hopeful thinking to format the hard drive, gain access, and then hoping the data will be there once you've reinstalled the OS.
