audio adapters??
My DVD player has digital optical out, but my stereo does not. It has seperate inputs for each channel. Anyone know what kind of adapter to use to convert a an optical line into something my stereo can use? Right now I'm stuck using the RCA component a/v lines (red, white, yellow) and can only get Dolby Pro Logic when I really want Dolby Digital 5.1.

Upgrade your stereo. If it can't take digital optical input, then any converter will just convert, or split it into the audio left, audio right, video input you have now.

damn. It's got a plug for everything else... red/white/yellow, 6 inputs for Dolby 5.1, a couple (sub)woofers and antennas, even has an optical out to connect to another machine, but no optical or coax in. I was hoping to get away without having to buy another bulky & expensive piece of equipment.

Of course, this is my limited knowledge. Go and ask at your local stereo specialist.

I've been very unsuccessful with finding a digital optical cable to 6 analog cables. Nothing at RadioShack.com. I found some optical to coax converts, and optical to single red/white cables elsewhere, but nothing I can use.

My Pioneer was ~$299 and has the fiber optic thingy but I've yet to buy the cable since it cost more than the receiver. The one thing (warning for anyone thinking about surround sound) I discovered was that many models were labeled as "digital ready" which is basically a load of crap. It means they have an empty space in the case so that if you were to buy the extra components and install them they'd probably fit in the box.

My question is this: In a "blind taste test" could anyone tell if the sound was coming via s-video, or the optical cable thing? (or does that 'make or break' the difference between pro-logic vs. the other?)

Just curious...

s-video = type of video i/o Tongue
there's coax digital audio
and there's optical digital audio
and then there's the 'regular' analog audio

I think it'd take good ears and a good setup to tell the difference between analog and digital, but the thing is that you get pro-logic/dolby digital 4.1 or 5.1, etc. with digital setups.
