windows shut down question
lol ... this must be a simple question.

With w2k I choose shutdown from the dialog and expected the machine to shut off.
It stayed on.
Do I always have to hit the power button?

I'm so used to having my machine go off automatically that this is starting to bother me. Is it just my hardware or is this standard operating procedures for M$?

mac user can't you tell Laugh

Thanks again Angelic

See this web site.

I think you call this "powerdown" rather than shutdown.

See this page for powerdown information on windows.

Thanks

Not a problem. Information is free on the Internet, you just have to find it.

What was the problem / solution , if I may ask ?

I have used that site to fix many a Win 98SE failed to shutdown problem.

Thanks

Hm... for me, XP has been the only OS that turns the pc off on it's own.

My experience has been that it depends on your power supply setup. The shut down thing worked for me on win98 & w2k on the same machine, but not with every installation.

It's one of those things I never had time to question or track down.

TTFN.

I tracked this down a few months back as this was annoying a few people in the office who were working on Windows 98 machines. Basically what I found from searching the Microsoft website was that this was in fact a bug of some sort, and a service pack is available for download that fixes this.

If you go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and make sure you download all patches (select the ones that are non-critical, too) and install these the problem cleared itself for me on 3 different spec machines, but all running Windows 98.

Hope this helps.

If you look at the site I put in the above message You will find on digging

some information and links for Microsoft patches for given MS bugs.

I found on installing XP that it will not shut down my PC , Win 98 SE did.

In the device Manager in XP : look up at menu for "View" => Show hidden devices

You may see a device such as I see in my attached NT.bmp which is maybe stopping my

powerdown.

I am too busy [ not worried ] to ask why now but I will fix this later.

MS update keeps trying to fix my VIA motherboard AC97 sound to Zero sound also.

So I live and learn 2 cents each day.

Thanks
