We can dream can't we.....take what some people feel about microsoft, multiply by 10, and you get how I feel about AOL.

My audience skews a little old anyway, but check this snapshot from some recent site stats of mine.

Browser types by visitors:
  1. AOL 4.x, Visits: 13,155
  2. AOL 6.x, Visits: 10,824
  3. MSIE 5.5, Visits: 8,629
  4. AOL 5.x, Visits: 6,928
  5. MSIE 6.x, Visits: 4,438
  6. Netscape 4.7, Visits: 1,854
  7. Netscape 3.x, Visits: 1,466
  8. MSIE 4.x, Visits: 1,137
  9. Netscape 4.5, Visits: 659

How's the dollar doing against the pound today? Maybe I'll think about it Smile

I think first priority is getting rid of Netscape, AOL can be second on the list Cool

Well from a web design standpoint, seeing netscape disappear wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

However, 9.9 out of 10 times, any user that has "problems" with the web site or the message board will be an AOL user.

It's a double edged sword. It's great that so many people get on-line, who might not normally do so, through AOL. But then they're stuck in AOL and their knowledge of the Internet and it's many applications seems to stagnate or even decline - IMHO.

AOL has in mind getting rid of Microsoft Internet Explorer, or at least making it less popular.

Firstly, how many versions of AOL used a custom version of MSIE?? They had years of opportunities to use Netscape or any other browser they wanted. Second, Netscape wasn't under AOL's management untill the feds were well into the antitrust suit. I can't see how AOL can claim damages under those circumstances.

Since AOL now owns Netscape they have the responsibility to pursue MS for it's practices while Netscape flew under its own banner. They have the responsibility to their stock holders to develop and protect all products they own regardless of the time factor. It is part of being a corporation. When one company buys another you get not only its assets but its liabilities. Also, if you read what the suit is about it isn't about what happened years ago. It is about MS continuing to bundle IE and encourageing ISP's to distribute IE after being found guilty in 1999 of anticompetitive charges. Love em or hate em...... AOL made me a great return on investment during the 90's. I still own some of their stock and would consider them negligent if they did not pursue this matter.

Yeah, and my point was that when was AOL's reign ever hindered by their use of MSIE in their software? They've hurt themself by buying out that piece of crap software and now their crying to mom to bail them out.

That is in no way crap software. It pioneered web browsing for many years - IE was orignaly based on Netscape even.

Well that would be Mozilla seeing as that's what Netscape is based on Tongue

No, Mozilla started off as old broken non working Netscape 4.x code. Now Netscape 6.x is just Mozilla code Tongue

Huh? Netscape was the original. Mozilla derived from Netscape 4.x after it got into the hands of AOL. They pushed Mozilla as open-source. Now, the tables have turned and Netscape is based on Mozilla and the Gecko engine. I think IE6 is also based on the Gecko engine but not sure.

IE was based around Netscape and SpyGlass Mosaic. It still has aknowledgments to Mosaic in it's credits. I still have a copy of Mosaic sitting on one single floppy disk here - what a browser! :-)

One of the largest ISPs in Japan (if not the largest), belonging to Fujitsu.

=> http://www.nifty.com

Oh, I forgot: it's indeed called So-Net, they also have a UK site:

What is going on with you and QooQ....you totally confuse me.

You speak German yet you're not German but you run a japan reference site.

QooQ lives in Japan yet isn't Japanese and used to live in America but is German or something.

What the hell is going on lol.

And QooQ lives up in the cold part of Japan. I spent about 4 years down on the Kanto Plain, about 20 ~ 30 km WSW of Tokyo - much warmer!
