Ok I'm quickly running out of disk space on my server (on one partition).

Here are the stats:

If anyone has any good ideas about what to delete to free up space please let me know. I've deleted chunks from /usr/share and /usr/doc but as fast as I remove it, it fills back up. I've considered moving things about but I'm hoping someone will be able to give me some good ideas of big files to delete before I take that action.

Looks like you have a log file growing in / somewhere. Check /tmp, or any applications that might be installed in /usr/local.

I've been scowering for days with no luck

/tmp is empty

There are no big logs around - most are in /var/log

I just can't find any big files :(....baaha

Try:

du -sh `ls /`

and it will print a summary of how much each directory is using. You can ignore var and home, and look at the others. Should help you find what is taking up most of the room.

Oky Doky....the culprit (thanks for that command btw):

640M usr

Then inside /usr

53M bin
211M lib
31M sbin

Most of the rest say no such file or directory.

Wooohoooo

I worked my way through /usr and eventually found the bugger!

It was a directory full or web/ftp/mail reports taking up 208MB so I killed the sucker (after double checking I was ok to delete it).

New stats:

/dev/hda1 743466 488485 254981 66% /

It sucks. You don't even get a hint of where the problem is when it occurs.

Also Ed the dumbass decided to delete his whole site yesterday so I spent about 3 hours uploading over 2000 files to restore it ugh.

If it wasn't for my backup he'd be sitting there twiddling his thumbs now.

Your clients don't keep local copies of files??? That is not a good thing. I hope you charge your clients to backup their data if they are so clueless not to keep local backups of files...most ISPs charge to conduct backups, mine charges $75.00 to conduct a normal backup (per hour).

Also based on your recent threads about backing up data, seems to me like you do not have a backup tape drive and automated backup program...you should consider investing in a more robust backup system (rather than creating tar.gz or zip files of sites you host). Because using a tape drive and backup program, you can automate a restoration process and not go through the manual pains you have experienced.

Just my opinion...

We make tape backups regularly but it was 1am last night and the quickest way to get the site back online was to use my local backup.
