Yeah, and that is cheap! I'm looking at £1,500 ($2k~ US) with some other companies! What did you pay for your first year as a young driver?

Don't get me started...the aussies have more slang words for stupid things than the rest of the universe.

"G'day mate, lets put anthoer shrimp on the barbie"

"rack off"

....sigh....do you still have Neighbours and Home and Away televised?

The trick is to use your parents insurance :)

I pay £600 (and did right from the start).

Ugh. No. The faster you start building your no-claims discount the better. Go solo, brave man!

Throw another shrimp on the barbie is an american thing for impersonating aussies. We don't even call "shrimps", shrimps. We call them Prawns.

Yeah, Neighbours and Home and Away are still on, I don't watch them though!

Try the other way around...in the UK at least. Although you can get big shrimps and tiny things, same with prawns.

My mum and dad went to Australia in August and went to a posh restaurant and had Oysters and my mum collapsed with food poisoning.

Nah, not a lifetime... Just a good year or so as being your primary job - assuming you want to learn it.

I've seen PHP's MySQL interface and I have to say I like GT::SQL much better. Something like GT::SQL (in fact, many of the GT:: modules) wouldn't even be feasible in PHP.

LOl....we should get it as cheap as the Americans! We pay stupid prices for actual nsurance (I'm looking at £1000 this year..for my 1.2 car), road tax, petrol and almost everything else!

Its insane!
1000 isn't that bad. My insurance is coming up in March; I'm guessing it'll be around CAD$2400 (though I'm thinking of raising my deductibles a bit to bring that down). That's about comparable.

You have to consider the value of a DB abstraction layer though GT:SQL does get things working with many DB's, but this is not nessecarily a good thing! While I will admit useful for commerical scripts such as Links SQL, if you want to take advantage of a databases full capabilties they are not good. They only allow you to use the basic features of databases, rather then taking advantage of the extra features that some databases have.

I was forwarded a message, in which Rasmus Lerdof (the guy that started PHP) was talking about DB abstraction layers. His quote was

Quote:
I am sure everyone by now has heard my opinion on db abstraction layers
though. As far as I am concerned they are pointless. It is the wrong
place to do things. The right way to do database abstraction is at the
functional layer. ie. write a function that implements a certain
database
action your application needs. get_user_record(), for example. Then
write this function for each database your application needs to support.

Anything short of this and you end up with a nearly useless system that
is
only capable of using generic or lowest-common-denominator SQL
statements.
For really simple applications that is ok, I guess, but for anything
substantial you are going to have to use DB-specific SQL to take
advantage
of each database properly. See Oracle's DECODE() statement for a
blatant
example of this.

I have to admit I agree with this.

Michael Bray
