Category name with umlauts ?

Category name with umlauts ?
Hi,
in Germany we have letters called umlauts ä, ü, ö.
I have a category called unterrichtsentwürfe and links changes the ü in _ so the category is displayed as unterrichtsentw_rfe.
Is there a way to tell links to change ü, ö, ä with ue, oe, ae?

Thanks
Matthias

If you're building static pages, you can use the StaticURLtr plugin. It's a free plugin available in the plugin download area of the admin.

Upps, this plugin works only half the way on my site.
I did only the replacements and they are working
unterrichtsentwürfe is now unterichtsentwuerfe

BUT
when I click on the changed category, links tells me "this category does not exist?"

Did I miss something?

Hm just looked at the server.
There was the old folder unterrichtsentw_rfe. I deleted it
And the new folder unterrichtsentuerfe is there too.
But I can not acces the new folder with the path
.../unterrichtsentwuerfe

links tells me everytime this folder is not there. But it is??

Can you help me?

Did you build all? A build changed won't get the name changes in.

Yes I did a build staggered. Could there be a mod rewrite problem?

You're confusing me. You're talking about category not existing errors and rewrite rules - all the signs that you're using page.cgi (ie. dynamic mode), but you're also talking about build staggered.

Hi Adrian,
I'm just searching for the problem.
You mean, when I'm using mod rewrite I can not use the plugin.
I read that this plugin is not for the dynamic mode, but I thought when I'm clicking on HTML in the admin panel, I'm, even with mod rewrite, in static mode?
Sorry I'm quite new to gossamer links. Need some more expirience.

So is there a way for me with mod rewrite in dynamic mode to get rid of the underscore _
I need only the following
ä:ae
ö:oe
ü:ue

Thanks
Matthias

If you're building pages (eg. Build => Build All), then you're using glinks in static mode and the StaticURLtr plugin works fine in this mode. If you're using page.cgi (and sometimes combined with mod_rewrite to make static looking urls), then you're using glinks in dynamic mode. In dynamic mode, the StaticURLtr plugin won't work (well, it can, but code changes are required). How are you using glinks?

Hi Adrian,
Andy set up mod rewrite on my page, so I'm using links in dynamic mode.
What do I have to change to use foreign letters in dynamic mode?

No answer Adrian. So is there a solution for foreign letters or is there no solution.
Can't believe it, that I'm the only one trying to use nonenglish letters in dynamic mode!!!

What to you think? Can this be done by mod rewrite?

There isn't a good and easy way of doing this because it's easy to replace those characters, but it's hard to go back the other direction (you can't look up the category name in the database afterwards because it's been changed). The only reliable method to get around this problem would be to embed the category ID or link ID in the url. That in itself has problems, since it means you can have anything in the url and only the ID would matter (well, I guess you might not consider this a problem).

There was a solution for earlier version of LSQL.
I had a plugin named DirName Converter, which was working using LSQL v2.x.

Unfortunately in LSQL v3.x, GT made changes, which made my plugin incompatible with LSQL v3.x.
Also they released StaticURLtr plugin, which made my plugin unnecessary. I felt this was incorrect from GT.

That's the current situation.

Read more about the dead DirName Converter plugin in these threads:
  • [Plugin] DirName converter plugin released
  • DirName_converter - LSQL v3.0.0 upgrade
  • [Plugin] International text converter - planned
  • DirName Converter Update (from webmaster33)

Unfortunately there was not enough interest for the plugin.
Also, the release of StaticURLtr plugin was the final point, when I decided, it is not worth develop an upgrade.
So the LSQL v3.x support was never implemented.

    Matthias,
So to answer your question, what you want it could be possible, but now there is no character translation plugin which supports dynamic mode.

    Hi webmaster33,
I saw your plugin already and wondered why there is no version for glinks3+

At the moment I have not so many umlauts in my category names and I don't want to install a plugin which includes so many changes.
That's to much only for changing 9-10 letters.

I thought there must be an easier solution

    Thanks for your answer.

Some things can be solved with globals, while others with plugins.
    This feature requires plugin.

However if there are only 9-10 changes needed, then may be possible to change displayed category umlauts with global.
But if you want to ignore the underscore in URL, then it requires plugin, IMHO.
