Don't buy it....

Don't buy it....
Nightmare to install and no support.

If you are a code freak, this script is for you. If you are a webmaster, look elsewhere.

I don't agree at all - I am no code freak and am getting Links to do what I want it to - yes it takes a bit of patience if you want to tweak it - but I guess it depends on what you want to do with it.

I see many posts here every day which is one level of support - and if you contact GT they will get back to you..

I see you have registered on March 14th and made a total of 3 posts - so you have certainly not given it much time...

Great answer...

If I am going to put up greebacks for a product, I expect a higher level of support and install instructions..period.

Maybe you expect less.

Hi,

No I don't expect less - but not sure what the problem is - GT offers free installation so why don't you just contact them or post your problems here so someone can help. Besides the installation is usually very smooth - I have done it a couple of times with no problems, and there is a 100+ page PDF manual..

:-)

First of all, are you talking about Links SQL, or Links 2.0? Links SQL is really easy to install, and as Klaus said, the installation is included in the price.

Links 2.0 might be a bit more tricky to set up, but if you follow the instructions step by step, it should be not so difficult.

If you have problems with the scripts, you can post a message in these forums (with a description of your problem, it doesn't really help to just say that the script is crap), and you will usually get help from a forum member. You can also contact the staff directly, by filling in the support form at http://gossamer-threads.com/support/.

You will need to clarify which script you are using. This is the Links SQL forum. Your original "rant" was in the Links2 forum.

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/...i?post=236108#236108

One thing I'd like to point out regarding the post linked to above is that you posted at around 6.30pm - that was your first ever post at the forum by the looks of it (judging by a quick search).

Your follow up reply was a few hours later, which was actually the middle of the night for me. To demand a reply that quick and then make a somewhat unnecessary rant as your follow up...well I don't see why anyone should assist you.

Hello....??

I saw some smart alec chastised a "customer", obviously you take that term lightly, for not being patient with the "volunteers" on this board.

Last time I looked, you want green backs for this product. Since you want my cash, how about answering my question.

If this is an open source script, I understand the smart asses. But bucks are demanded and so are answers.

If you do infact want some help then, firstly stop being rude and secondly provide some constructive and useful information for people to work with in assisting you.

I will lock this thread if you show any futher unwillingness to receive help or provide no useful information for us.

Hi,

I don't recall getting a support request from you through our support system:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/support/

If you're not happy with using that system, you can email me directly for support at jack@gossamer-threads.com or like Paul and Klaus and Ivan have said in this forum, you can post your problems on here and everyone would be more than happy to help you through them.

Alternatively, if you wish to use the telephone, our number is posted clearly on the website, (604) 687-5804.

We realise that the instructions are not the most exhaustive, but we have lots of products and not enough people to write documentation for them. We're working on the issue and can only work so many hours a day.

Let me know if there are any problems you ran into with installation that we can help you through, either on the forum or through GT support.

Jack.

Links is the very best directory script that I've ever worked with.

There are scripts which are faster to install, but Links has worked flawlessly for me on a variety of servers. If you follow the instructions, it takes a few minutes to install it and a while to get it tweaked to look and function just the way you want. But that's the beauty of Links 2.0 (and SQL I presume) - that Links is very very flexible so you can make it do exactly what you want. Other scripts which take a few minutes less to install initially don't provide the same ability to easily and fully customize them.

If you're looking for a script you can install in 5 minutes and apply template x y or z that 5,000 other people also use and be done with it, I'll admit you could find a better script for your needs.

If you're looking for a powerful and flexible script for a site that you plan to invest some time in to make it the best it can be, and want a product that you can do virtually anything with customizing from the smallest detail to mods which add major functionality, customized to the unique needs of your site and with a robust upgrade path (Links SQL) for when your site grows, Links 2.0 is a great script.

I should also add that when I first installed Links 2.0 it was 1999 I believe, and I didn't know any perl at that time. I learned a lot by adding mods from this forum and had fun in the process.

Echo all of the above. I installed Links 2.0 a few years ago, and at that point had no experience of Html, perl or anything to do with the web. Within a few days, I had a working site and within a weeks had it tweaked to look like I wanted. Support from everyone on the forums and at GT has always been excellent and speedy. Its been a mostly enjoyable learning curve and I now get 3000 page impressions every day.

The secret to Links 2.0 is patience and time. If you make the effort to read through the forums, and play with your installation you will learn loads, and get the result you want.

Reading the manual is also a good idea when installing Links 2 Smile
