Mailbox size limit

Mailbox size limit
Is there an admin setting where you can limit the size of users mailboxes? (kb).

If so, can you allow a user to see a percentage of their limit in the mailbox, or would I have to write a global / plugin to do this?

Hi,

No, there isn't a setting to limit the number of PM's by size or by volume. Sounds like a worthwhile addition though, I've passed the suggestion on to Jason.

Cheers,

Would you want size and volume, or just one or the other?

What might be a good addition as well is the users ability to save a message.

Rather than have all saved all the time ask the user to make a decision on each PM that they have in the system prior to saving it.

By doing this it will control the size without intervention of the admin (as often). Throw in the ability to do a mass delete of old PM's by the admin with prior notice to the userbase via a "system announcement" that is posted to all users over X size in their PM in/out box (sent via a PM of course).

Just a thought!Cool

I can see the size of the pm boxes being an issue.

Lets say you had many thousands of users (as GT would well know I suppose), and each were lazy with removing old posts (like I am), I can see the size and performance of the database really suffering unless you have a dedicated server or multiple servers.

Setting limits on the number of messages may be benefitial to someone, I am not sure.

An example of the use of this feature, as a reminder next to the inbox and outbox (received and sent) messages portion of the user's Messages.

You have reached 27% of your inbox limit.
Incoming messages here...

You have reached 98% of your outbox limit.
Sent messages here...

If you could set a kB limit on the admin, then this would be possible, and it would just begin removing old messages when the limit is reached.

I suggested an autopurge function to Jason a short time ago( I think ), but I think this would be even better.

EDIT: Not comparing products, but I am used to this luxury with my existing forum software, something that would really be useful in GForum. See attaced pic...

I'd echo that and maybe suggest a mandetory auto purge after 2 wks except for specific messages selected by the user to store.

But overall I agree, some scheme for PM box clean up is needed.

hmnmm, so a catch up to vB and phpBB?

Good idea.

But would like to see also temporary overload ability. Over on a vB forum I didn't get a pm because I didn't have enough space. Maybe have the pm shoot to a designated overflow email if it isn't possible to store it in a special communal area or such type of space. Of course this is n't to be used all the time but for a bit until the the person can clean out their mailbox.

Also, I was gonna search a bit if this was suggested or not. But ahh Heck I'll post on to this thread since it involves beefing up the pm area. I would like to see Search ability for pm's ... sometimes you just can't remember were something went and it would be nice to just search for it.

And, almost forgot.
If you're going to mass delete remember the stink over at hotmail. I would like to see an email warning of the procedural dump. Thereby having a chance to move or save something. I'm lazy.
