spambot
can dbman be used to defeat spambots?

instead of creating an html page with names and email addresses (with mailto links) i was thinking of using a view or find record(s) link in dbman to build the page. the database would contain the email address and the resulting page displayed by dbman would have the mailto link. would this work? in other words, would the spambots follow the dbman link to build the page that would contain the email addresses?

Rather than using mailto links within the records you can use the Private Email mod available in the Resource Center.

This way the email addresses are not displayed within the records. Instead people click on a link to complete a form which will email the record owner.

this is not in a forum or with registered users. it's a government site and we want to have links for the public to contact city officials. we want to use mailto so that the sender's typical email address is automatically inserted. if we use any kind of form on our site, we lose that -- although we can ask the visitor to enter email address on form, it makes it easier for a visitor to make up an address.

bottom line -- we want the sender to reveal email address in mailto

If you want to use dbman for email purposes, then instead of using a link, use a form & button to bring up the page of mailto links. I don't think the spambots could read the proper hidden tags and follow the script action, but then again I don't know anything about spambots.

I see your point about needing the email addresses, but keep in mind that not everyone is working on a computer where they can utilize an email program. Such as people at work who want to use a hotmail address or some other personal email address. I often find myself in this situation.
