Buying DELL server for SQL, need advice!

Buying DELL server for SQL, need advice!
I've been considering buying a DELL server, with this:
Intel® Pentium® III Processor at 750MHz, 1U PowerApp 100
2X9GB Ultra3(Ultra 160) LVD SCSI Hard Drive
1GB RAM (32X72MB) the MAXIMUM

http://www.dell.ca/...wrap_web_servers.htm

Running RH Linux 6.2 + Apache

This is a 1U form factor server which I can colocate at CI Host for $100.00 a month which includes 20GB monthly transfer.

The price for this server, $7500.00 CAN including shipping + taxes.
I intend to run LinkSQL + AdvertPro + WWWThreads + ?? maybe chat software but not likely plus whatever else I find useful.

I've been told if I am considering spending the amount I am that I should run Solaris instead of RH Linux, any thoughts on this. If it is within my budget then I may consider it but don't think it's necessary.

Did you know that a comparison of Win2K versus RH Linux (with all hardware specs equal and for my particular server) would be able to handle 10 times more traffic.
Win2K (500K-1M hits/day) whereas RH Linux (20K-100K) hits/day, or so DELL says is there any truth to this and why is this so?

and I'm working on my MSCE....

I'm am also wondering about LinkSQL running with Win2K versus RH Linux. I am familiar with both OS's so that's not an issue.
Specifically, what's IIS's equivalent for mod_perl? Is there one?

Based on the software I intend to run I should just stick with Linux right?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

The setup for that machine is pretty steep. That machine is almost identical to Deda 4 at Virtualis (I use there servers), but it has half the ram.

http://www.virtualis.com/dedicated.html

I usually recommend that people get a dedicated server, rather the colo a server. I also recommend that you avoid CIHost. Don't won't to get into the details, but they are not the best company to have a server with. Go for a big company such as Virtualis, Rackspace, Digital Nation etc who know what they are doing when it comes to clients with needs like yours.

Soloris is a powerful solution, I've only had a little experience on it - I've got Perl/MySQL apps to work on it though, didn't notice much of a difference to tell the truth though.

Redhat Linux or FreeBSD running Mod_Perl should be fast enough, I wouldn't bother with Solaris. BTW - I am fairly sure NT doesn't have a Mod_Perl equivalent, and I would stay away from NT anyway :)

Cheers.

I would run Solaris on a Sparc chipset, before I'd run any of the others on an Intel chipset. In fact, that is what I'm doing. But on an Intel chipset, Solaris would not be my first choice. A flavor of Linux probably would be. I avoid NT for reasons that are legion. Also, I don't think any of M$ configurations will be a Unix configuration -- remember, they fine-tune Windows, and try to run Linux out of the box -- no tuning.

Solaris has advantages in multi-server configurations. On a single server, unless you want to run on a Sparc chipset, Solaris offers no advantages.

But, especially for Unix, Sparc has much better peformance than Intel.

Actually the setup for the machine is very reasonable, they advertise a setup fee of $200.00.

Well for the speed and hardware I want my server to have, colocation is cheaper considering operational costs at yearly intervals but it comes with the high initial cost which is something that I'm am comfortable with.
Say I did go the dedicated route, for the same or comparable hardware specs that I want, the price per month would be $700.00 per month and greater, that's the main problem I see with dedicated hosting.

Thanks for the input with CI Host, I will have to look into this in more detail.

Thanks you.

Do a search at

For CIHost if you want to do some research, you'll be disappointed if you wanted to host with em.

You really cannot go budget when looking for a dedicated host, a good host will cost a bit more then most hosts do.

Stay well away from CI Host. We got suckered by their low charges and they were rubbish. We just mananged to cancel and moved to RackSpace.com - very good indeed!

Hope this helps.

How did you manage to cancel CI Hosts???

I am still waiting for refund from them...billing tells me to speak with ded. support team, ded. support team tells my to talk with billing....

The server I ordered came (after 10 days set up time, and 24 hours pre-testing) with a "segmention error" (the first script I ran, an account boot they installed), and since they didn´t fix (or explain anything) that after two weeks, I thought I should cancel....but that is just as difficult as getting people to fix server....they have o.k. support chat, that can do many things, like fixing small problems and so on.

Other peolple I have seen, have emailed CEO or whatever the boss position is called, and then got their problems solved...anyone know the email to this person (CEO@cihosts.com?)?

I think CI hosts is a nice host, as long as you don´t get any serious problems (and of course, you´ll newer experience that :) ).

Just a little "angry" me....

Now I have hot a host that I feel comfortable with so far...Cost some more, but at least the server works :)

Update: DO NOT ever, ever, ever choose CI Host if money is a object. When it all comes to all, its more expensive.

I am to angry to tell right now, but basically, they will not give me any money back for the server.
