I had a fight with Dmoz as well.
As far as I can see the attribution only applies if you are linking to their database. This is not what we are doing though Dmoz likes to think that this is not the case. Big Brother tactics as I see it. They dropped me from their indexing. It did hurt site stats a bit, maybe 20% in the short term becuase of the 'linking' by other sites who draw direclty from their database. I have had long discussions with Pugdog about proper keywords and what people look for & etc, and he certainly appears to know his stuff. Been at it a lot of years.
My opinion is don't worry about them do your own thing.
