[ANNOUNCE] Third release candidates for 4.0.4 and 4.1.3

Folks,

I have just tagged 3rd release candidates for 4.0.4 and 4.1.3:

http://xenbits.xen.org/staging/xen-4.0-testing.hg (tag 4.0.4-rc3)
http://xenbits.xen.org/staging/xen-4.1-testing.hg (tag 4.1.3-rc3)

Please test! Assuming nothing crops up, we will make these the official
point releases at the end of this month.

I did a testing for 4.1.3-rc3 with Linux 3.4.6 as dom0.
I met the following 3 issues.
(1) Can't get deep C-state status via "xenpm" command.
(2) Can't get P-state info via "xenpm" command.
(3) HVM S3 resume error.
No. 1 and No. 2 exists on 4.1.3-rc3, but don't exist on latest xen-unstable tree.
No. 3 issue exists on both 4.1.3-rc3 and latest xen-unstable tree.
CCed Konrad.
As for the PM features, could it be the reason that xen 4.1.3 can't work very well with Linux 3.4.6 as Dom0?

Details:
(1) C-state issue
Only C0 and C1 C-state via "xenpm get-cpuidle-states" command line; no info for C2 or C3.
But xen-unstable tree (CS #25643) can have C0, C1, C2, C3.

What was the status of these 3 in 4.1.2? i.e. is this a regression in
the 4.1.x branch or not?

No. 1 and 2 should be a regression, because we have automatic test cases to cover the 2 issues.

This sort of contradicts your own suspicion that 3.4.x may not
interact well with 4.1.x - is the known working case perhaps
with some other kernel version used in Dom0 (albeit the support
for this isn't that old yet in pv-ops)?

Finally, I did a test with an old dom0(2.6.32.57) in the following tree.

My first suspicion is right. :-)
Issue 1 and 2 (C-state and P-state) can work well with 4.1.3-rc3 and old dom0.
And issue 3 still exists. I think it doesn't block the release of xen 4.1.3.
If using Xen 4.1.3 with Linux 3.4.x dom0, you may meet some small bugs. :-)

Both 4.1.3-rc3 and 4.2-unstable tree have the following issues.
A. HVM S3 issue as I mentioned.
(I'll file a bug to track this.)
B. a VGA display issue with a SR-IOV hot-plug case

That might be due to the CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR_AGGREGATOR being compiled
in your kernel (df88b2d96e36d9a9e325bfcd12eb45671cbbc937).
If you don't have CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR_AGGREG.. as either module or built-in
can you get to lower C-states?

Could be, but in 3.4 was when the xen-acpi-processor was introduced so it _should_ be working.
The only thought I have for the low C-states is the acpi_pad, but nothing else.

can't see any CVE and XSA numbers and the check-in descriptions don't

All of XSA-7 through XSA-11 are fixed in 4.1.3 and 4.0.4. So there's a good
security argument for everyone to upgrade, quite apart from the various
other fixes (e.g., there are over 100 patches in 4.1 branch since 4.1.2) --
libxl bug fixes, and a bunch of hypervisor stuff, fixing for particular
systems, or particular minority usage cases, for example... There's no
broader generalisation than that to be made really, each patch fixes some
usually fairly minor issue, but they add up to a big bag of small fixes!

XSA-7 to XSA-11 *are* called out explicitly in their respective changeset
comments in both 4.0 and 4.1 repositories by the way. If you can't see them
you may not be looking at the right thing. ;-)
