Retrieving custom data from VM using XAPI?

Hi,
Is there any way for a guest to expose information that can be read
from outside using only XAPI? VM.xenstore_data has everything from
/local/domain/{id}/vm-data but HVM guests aren't able to write there
(at least on XenServer 5.6/6.0) Guests are able to write to
/local/domain/{id}/data though. Is there any way to see this using
XAPI? Any other suggestions?
