What is the structure of $editpage in AlternateEdit hook, and how to use it

Hi,
I want to add a special line to every new page when first
creat/edit it. And I want to use the AlternateEdit hook to write and
extension, but failed, it seems, I can't do like this
"$editpage->mArticle->mContent=$temp1;" when start a new page.

Why that hook? It seems to me that EditFormPreloadText would do a better job.
