UploadWizard changes live on Commons

We've pushed some updates to UploadWizard, most notably:

* disabled multiple-file selection in browsers where it didn't work
* files now start uploading immediately when selected (this can be disabled
server-side if there are problems with it)
* improved category input fields
* 'skip tutorial' step is now saved as a pref instead of a cookie -- so the
tutorial won't come back every time you switch computers anymore!
* fixes for when pre-upload thumbnails do and don't get drawn
* initial API for fetching upload campaign metadata
('action=uploadcampaign'), to be used by Wiki Loves Monuments mobile app

Don't be shy about giving feedback!

Ha! Of course I pick today to do some browser automation for UW. This had
me scratching my head for a bit. :)

Yeeey... less wasted time.

What does that mean, exactly? Is there a bug associated with that?

Did you also enable the parameter passing feature?

Will there be another push to fix UW bugs before september? There are
still open issues that we would like to see resolved before WLM.

Thanks,
Strainu

Yes! Yay!

Maybe it's https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28850 or
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32353 but I'm not sure.
For more details on the recent updates, see
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/q/project:mediawiki/extensions/UploadWizard+-owner:L10n-bot+status:merged,n,z
(all of the merged commits specifically to the UploadWizard extension
since late April, excepting the localisation messaging updates).

> Did you also enable the parameter passing feature?

I can't tell from searching Bugzilla & Gerrit - can you give a bug
number or commit number?

> Will there be another push to fix UW bugs before september? There are
> still open issues that we would like to see resolved before WLM.

Strainu, is there a unified list of those issues? I did some searching
and I couldn't find one.

But when I compare that list of merged commits in Gerrit to
https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?path=%2Ftrunk%2Fextensions%2FUploadWizard&title=Special%3ACode%2FMediaWiki
I'm happier, because there are now more developers with active expertise
in UploadWizard than there used to be. It's more likely that issues can
get fixed faster.

Thanks, and good luck with WLM!

I generally try to keep
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload_Wizard_news
up-to-date, it's explained in more detail there.

(Bugzilla: 28850) Improved category interface: You no longer need to
confirm each category, and the indicator that a category does not
exist is passive as opposed to a scary dialog.

Indeed, I'm not sure what this refers to either.

Seconded - if you want to create a tracking bug for issues that you
see as blockers for WLM 2012, that would be very helpful.

We don't have a lot of dedicated effort on Upload Wizard right now,
but a single contractor (Mark Holmquist) will continue to churn
through issues/feature requests at least for another 2 months or so,
and Brion and Kaldari have kindly been helping with code reviews and
improvements. The main priority areas for improvements are error
handling + small UX issues.

Plus, there's an exciting GSOC project for improved Flickr integration
( https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Drecodeam/GSoC_2012_Application
), Kaldari is mentoring that one as well.

I don't know if anything changed with the license selector part of the code
and interface, but I tried uploading some maps (from OpenStreetMap) with
the upload wizard. More than once, I completely missed the license
selection part (e.g. not see it, not fill it out).

When I did find it, it was not intuitive. OSM maps are [still] CC-BY-SA
2.0 and I had to chose the "expert" option, and then go to the
Commons:Licensing page and then find link to the copyright tags page.

I don't necessarily mind this for the expert option, but since we know the
source is openstreetmap.org (from what I put in the source field), wouldn't
it be nice if it automatically suggested CC-BY-SA 2.0 license. Or if the
source is .gov, then suggest public domain. [.of course, also be able to
override it like a combo box]

Cheers,
Katie

Checking your recent uploads on Commons, I see two:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Location_map_Washington_DC.png
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Locator_Map_of_Washington_DC,_May_2012.png

One was not uploaded through UW but through the "upload new file"
mechanism. The other was uploaded without license with the license
provided later.

You cannot skip the "Release rights" step, but you can choose
"I believe this work is freely licensed or legally in the public
domain. I understand that if I do not add the necessary licensing
information in a timely fashion, the file may be deleted."

This will lead to {{subst:uwl}} on the description page, which what I see here.

Perhaps. Detecting common cases would be nice -- but each one requires
special care. Go ahead and file a bug for OSM license detection; we
might be able to get to it at least in the long run.

I deleted a few others that were mistakes (wrong map extents), and the
second one above is also a mistake.

Okay, that's what happened. I think just intuitively I was looking for
form fields to fill out (text boxes, select/combo boxes) and was expecting
to see a drop down box for license selection.

Maybe the current layout works for some people though.

Now that I look again, I see the "copyright tags" link for expert users.
(missed it before) That's helpful and allows skipping a couple steps.
Maybe it could be bold?

It would be nice to have for sure.

Also knowing to put a link in the source field (if it's something obtained
online) is not obvious unless you know from experience of how the
information is turned into the template.

Cheers,
Katie

Re: UploadWizard changes live on Commons [In reply to]

A question about upload speed - can you show what the current upload speed
is in the progress bar? And also, what would be the maximum upload speed
that I could expect to achieve with chunked uploading? Technically I've got
an upload speed of up to 10MB/s, but my upload speed is considerably slower
than that using UploadWizard, is this a server-side constraint due to lack
of ability to support everyone at whatever their max uploads will be? I
don't mind waiting for an upload to finish, but when people start using the
Wizard to upload gigabytes of data, this could lengthen the process
considerably.

I was uploading a 317MB file and I hit an error, Internal error: Server
failed to store temporary file. Not sure how to troubleshoot this one, the
file is an .ogv downloaded from archive.org.

And re-trying gives me Unknown error: "
internal_api_error_UploadStashFileNotFoundException". CCing Brion in as he
seems to be working on the Upload Wizard at present.

Yes, this is the biggest remaining issue we know about with chunked
uploads -- looks like the server-side assembly for very large files
might be causing timeouts. See further discussion here:

I was talking about
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikilovesmonuments/2012-May/002904.html

Obviously, I did not read that email carefully, since it gives a link
to commons, so yeah, it was deployed.

I've asked around and found out about
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Upload_wizard

The bug list is empty as of now, we'll fill it as we go along. I've
also logged https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37144 for
tracking WLM bugs, I'll do my best to keep those 2 in sync.
