Importing an Excel Spread sheet

Is there anyway to import a spreadsheet into my Wiki. I have quite a bit of
information I need to place in my WiKi and it is on an excel spreadsheet.
Now to have to make up tables for all this will take me forever so is there
an easer way of getting this into my WikI beside just adding the spread
sheet as a download

Hi Dave

You can use <http://area23.brightbyte.de/csv2wp.php>. You have to export as csv
from excel though (I think they call it "text").

Copy a table, paste it into

You could place the extension (.XLS) into the array of file types that
are allowed to be uploaded, and then simply upload the files. They
will be fairly useless to others until they download them and bring
them into Excel.

Another way that's more interactive is to export them as CSV files,
import them into their own tables in MySQL, then use the sql2wiki
extension to display them. This is much more versatile, but can only
be done on a trusted site, as you generally don't want just anyone
sending arbitrary SQL to your database. You can also update and change
the tables at will, and have the changes instantly show up on the wiki.

Here's some examples of live data display:

I used this site with great success....very easy. All you do is copy
all the cells you want and paste them into their form, then it
regurgitates the code for your wiki.

Another thing you could do to save bytes but still have the data
accessible to all readers is to just wrap the CSV in <pre></pre> like we
do on http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Taiwan_datums/Test_points .

Lovely! It properly converts Apple Numbers stuff, as well.

I guess the incorrect handling of delimited separators is not so
important as long as you only do copy/paste from Excel or Numbers,
which defaults to tab delimiters.

But be aware that this extension probably will not work properly with
arbitrary exported CSV data.

Re: Importing an Excel Spread sheet [In reply to]

I have a solution. It's not pretty, but it works.

1 - From Excel, export the table as .CSV (comma-separated values)
2 - Open the file in Word (or another word processor), then do the
following:
- Find and replace all commas (,) with the pipe (|) character
- Find and replace all (^p) with the following string (^p|-^p|),
where ^p is CR-LF (carriage return-line feed, i.e. new line)
3 - copy and paste this into MediaWiki, add the first and last line of the
table format, and you're done

For example, starting with this csv file:
field 1, field 2, field 3
field 4, field 5, field 6

After applying the word processor magic, it becomes:

|field 1| field 2| field 3
|
|field 4| field 5| field 6
Copy and paste into the table format in mediawiki:

{| border="1" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0"
|field 1| field 2| field 3
|
|field 4| field 5| field 6
|}
