Wikinews logo vanished

A version of Wikinews logo was deleted on Commons and many sites
including WMF and over 100 Wiktionaries lost its logo from Main Page.
I don't have information on other sites.

Yesterday I found a red link on [[Wikimedia:Home]] in the place
formerly occupied by 35px Wikinews logo. It is the third time Commons
change affects the other site; once the change of Wikinews logo size
(Elian fixed it at least on WMF- she remembered it prausibly), second
the vanishment of Wikisource logo from some projects (because of
speedy deleteion). And now, Wikinews logo is deleted and many sites
have a red link on its front page.

Already Commons guy tried to fix it - upload a huge size logo instead
of 35px. It doesn't work currently and still red links appears - if
worked, a huge size logo would have appeared on the Main Page on
several sites, and it would be another headache ....

In my humble opinion Commons administrators will be better and nicer
to other projects if they will delete any Wikimedia logo never more.
Instead of spare those tiny images they can spare time of many
editors.

In defense of the admins on commons, and the way you ought to access
files from Wikicommons is to access the main image, which is then
resized according to your needs automatically if you specify the
required pixels size in the image tag by MediaWiki software. This way a
"higher resolution" image can be pulled up, and there aren't redundant
images cluttering up commons. I have rarely had any problems with this
on other images I've used from commons, but it seems like the logos tend
to have at least 3-4 different "versions" of the same image that vary
just by size. This is not needed. Of course, that would mean that all
of the projects that connect to each variant of the images in this case
perhaps should have been contacted that a change was going to be made.

A minor annoyance, however, is that there is no way to see what images
on Wikicommons are in use elsewhere with other Wikimedia projects
directly. You need to search each one of the hundred or so wikis (each
language domain seperately) and check to see if the file is in use.

You seem to fail to understand what I said. The relic of deleted
image, the red link can't be replaced automatically. it is very ugly
the Main Page contains red [[Image:XXXX.png]] - a horrible scene. Your
proposed fact doesn't prevent it at all.

In addition to that, after deletion, it is very hard to find the image
on Commons. Under such circumstance, why editors can specify the
image.

So I conclude Commons should delete any logos nevermore.

there is, it's here: http://www.juelich.de/avatar/check-usage/

For images such as logos, it would be good to use it once in a while.

And I agree with Aphaia that logos and some "popular" images should be
deleted with extreme care, although I do agree with Robert that we do
not need 20 000 versions of the same image in different sizes.

Best,

Delphine

It is not the perfect solution currently - it checks projects which
contains over 10,000 articles, shortly all Wikinews and Wikiquotes are
not checked, most of Wikibooks and Wiktionary and many, over 150
Wikipedias. - at least it was so in the beginning of July, Arnomane
said to me.

Commions admins should be aware check-usage isn't omnipotence.

It isn't even 100% up to date on what is over 10,000 entries (although
English Wikibooks just past 10,000 recently.) :)

You can use this great tool;
http://www.juelich.de/avatar/check-usage/

This should *always* be used befor removing media from commons.
