Short Domain Name

A generic (eg non country-specific) top level domain that is short (on
the order of 2 - 3) letters would be ideal. sourceforge.net has sf.net

The two most ideal domains are wp.net and wp.org

whois says that wp.org is owned by telepathy.com, a us based internet
focused group that does not seem to be greedy.

A well placed email by a wikipedia official asking for release would
be a good thing.

Please keep the list aprised of your activity regarding short domain name search

Sourceforge doesn't have to deal with brand though.

What about all the different languages: wp.de, wp.ja, etc, are they
available? If not it will lead to more abuse.

No matter who it is, if it's taken it will be a pain.

It's already a pain to keep track of the domains that are owned (not
to mention expensive). This would make it a lot worse.

this is the point of having a non-country-specific generic tld

Yes, but they'd be needed to maintain brand

Hello,

The problem is that even if we got wp.org we will want to get other wp
entries in info. fr. uk. ... That will just double the cost of domain
registration.

We should just stick with wikipedia.org. , don't let registrars make
more money than what is really needed.

cheers,

That's fascinating; I actually didn't know that.

I'll try to remember that the next time I type
http://www.sourceforge.net/

Why would we want to associate wikipedia with WordPerfect? They've got
nothing to do with each other :)

Similarly, I wonder why so many emails seem to be referring to the World
Monuments Fund. For those who share my interest in Wikipedia as a
trademark, I would suggest that one helpful way to protect its trademark
status is to practice actually using the word (properly, of course), and
*not* constantly acronymize it. The same applies to helping the world at
large learn that the nonprofit organization behind all of this is the
Wikimedia Foundation (not Wikipedia Foundation).
