Google knol launches with CC BY default

Google Knol is live. It launches with CC BY default.

Mike Linksvayer say, s prior to its launch Knol was often speculatively
compared to Wikipedia, it should be noted that the default Knol license (CC
BY) could permit using Knol content in Wikipedia (with attribution of
course), but knols under more restrictive options could not be incorporated
into Wikipedia. On the other hand Wikipedia content could not be
incorporated into knols (except in the case of fair use of course), even in
the case Wikipedia migrates to CC
BY-SA<http://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/8213>ā€” Knol doesn't
offer a copyleft license.

Why can't you just pick "all rights reserved" and then add a GFDL
license notice? The phrase "all rights reserved" doesn't preclude
releasing a work under a license. In fact, nowadays the phrase is
pretty much legally meaningless.

It's been pointed out on another list that there is a clause somewhere
that says you give Google a load of rights allowing them to relicense
your content as they please. So it's not quite as free and open as we
might like.

That sounds like an additional freedom (to Google), rather than a
restriction. Just because Google can license it under something else
doesn't mean we can't continue to use it under the original license.

Technically it's not a restriction, right, rather it's a caution about
being aware of what kinds of control you surrender when entering into
such an arrangement.

No more than the rights you surrender when licensing your work under
CC-BY (especially in states where attribution is a right that can't be
surrendered).
