(easy) SUL questions

Hello knowledgeable people!

I'm trying to write about unified login for a larger text about
Wikimedia and wanted to double-check my understanding of the process:

1) is this text currently correct? What should be added to it?
"At this time, you must create an account on for each new project you
wish to work on. This is changing with the introduction in mid-2008 of
single-user login, where users can link their existing accounts across
all Wikimedia projects."

2) in future, will people be able to create just one account on a
project and be able to log in with it on all of the projects? Or will
new users still have to manually create their account (using the same
name) on each wiki they wish to work on?

3) After SUL is fully deployed, when users create a new account (on,
say, the english wikipedia) will that name automatically be 'reserved'
for use on all Wikimedia wikis? [if so, when will this happen?]

3) is there a preferred name for SUL yet? Single-user login? Unified
login? Others?

Thanks in advance, and feel free to send me edits/comments off-list. :)

You have to run Special:MergeAccount once. When you have done that an
account will automatically created when you visit another wiki you
don't have an account yet.

Currently, they just:
1. Create an account on any wiki.
2. Visit Special:MergeAccount and follow the instructions (this merges
their accounts and creates a global one)
3. Profit
3.1. the ability to log-in to any wiki with the same userdata
without creating a new account
3.2. "global session" type thing where with one log-in, you are
logged into most of the wiki-sites at once.

I'm pretty sure that the answers for 3 are "yes" and "now"

I think those are all used interchangeably, but we use "global user"
in the software. <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:GlobalUsers>

Hmm, really? I thought your name was only reserved if you use
mergeaccount. Lemme check.

1) Created account "ownersdraw" on en.wikipedia.
2) Logout
3) Created account "ownersdraw" on de.wikipedia (using a different
password, just in case)

Worked, so no, it's not set up that way yet.

Oh yeah, you're right.. my problem was that I was assuming this person
already merged accounts (oops).

Does anyone know if the plan for the future (after existing accounts
are sorted out) is to have names be reserved when you register them
anywhere, though?

Thanks all for your help

I think that is the eventual plan, if and when we actually get to the
point where everything else is sorted out.

It's entirely incorrect. At this time, you may create an account on
any project, and if no one else has used that name on any Wikimedia
project, you can register it for global use on all wikis immediately.
Logging out and then back in (or maybe not even that) will cause you
to be logged in on all wikis.

There's no "in future" about it. It's in place now.

Yes. This will probably happen shortly, in the next couple of months,
I suppose. Currently, the name is only reserved when you visit
Special:MergeAccount; in the future, that step will be skipped.

Don't think so, really.

Yes, of course. Accounts will be automatically unified on account
creation in the (probably not-too-distant) future. I imagine this
hasn't yet been done only because we want a gradual rollout so any
problems can be spotted before they become too serious.
