Re: [WikiEN-l] CAS and Wikipedia -- CAS agrees to help contribute

It's all the more remarkable because, as our chemistry librarian here said,

"By the way, this is VERY uncharacteristic of CAS. They have sued
others (including non-profits) over using their CAS numbers. Maybe
they don't have a way to sue Wikipedia...."

Or maybe they took a good hard look at how many chemists are on WP, and the PR value

Regardless their motivation, kudos to Martin, and thank you for
letting us that, Phoebe.

Not sure how he pulled that off, but congratulations! That could be a
huge benefit, and it's certainly good of CAS to offer cooperation in
the efforts.

Re: [WikiEN-l] CAS and Wikipedia -- CAS agrees to help contribute [In reply to]

Hoi,
I hope they realise that as Wikipedia is available under the GFDL, people
who use this data are able to use this information without a need to ask for
permission. When this is not understood by them and when they do not act
accordingly the CAS numbers are not to be used by the Wikipedias as they are
problematic. In the requirements for the inclusion of material the notion of
"Wikipedia only" has been soundly rejected on several occasions. This has
been underlined by the WMF board on several occasions.

So I hate to be the spoil sport but in my opinion the phrasing of this
permission does not give enough assurances that we can use this data.

Thanks,
GerardM

Legally, I don't think it's out problem.

They agreed to let wikipedia use CAS numbers. Our conditions for
content are clearly labeled and widely known. Saying "Oh, we didn't
know" later won;t count much in court. No that their claim to the
numbers would have a firm stand anyway.

Personally, I think they know exactly what wikipedia is, and they
realized that we (or some similar project) would be their only
"competition" for an alternative numbering schema. So they thought, if
you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Which is fine with me :-)

Cheers,
Magnus

You are wrong. CAS numbers extracted from Wikipedia are not subject to
the GFDL, since they lack any copyright protection.

Including that PD data into Wikipedia does not "un-PD" it.. People are
and were free to use CAS numbers without the need to ask for
permission long before the data was inserted into Wikipedia.
