Blank XAuth credentials - connects every second try only

Dear experts,
I have a particular VPN configuration, which does not require username and password to be specified. Therefore I specified the following lines in the corresponding profile:
Xauth username
Xauth password
This should set both to (blank). When I use the config to connect, it fails with "no response from target". The creepy part is that when I try to connect with exactly the same information right after, it connects successfully. It turns out that it only connects successfully after one failing try...
Any ideas why this might happen? If interested, I can also provide the config files + credentials for testing.
