vpnc using tap interface on opensolaris

tun interface configures with a mac address of 0:0:0:0:0:0. Company uses software that checks for valid mac addresses and is not allowing vpn tunnel for this mac address.
I tried to run it with --ifmode tap which starts to configure the tap device but errors with
can't get tunnel HW address: Operation not applicable
