Connecting to VNC before loggin on

Hi,

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. I have installed RealVNC (free
version, version 4.1.2) in server mode. But when I restart my machine
(Windows XP Professional), I cannot connect to VNC unless I log on first.
The only way to make it work entirely remotely is to remove the password
from the user account, so windows logs on automatically.

I tried to change the log-on settings of the VNC server to not logon as
"local system", but log on as a specific user with the name and password
filled in. But in that case, the option to allow VNC to interact with the
desktop is disabled. The result is, I can connect to the VNC server and type
in the VNC password before I log into windows, but then I get an error as
VNC is trying to display the desktop screen. This problem persists after I
log into windows.

Is it possible my Norton 360 Firewall is interfering? I don't think so, but
I thought I mention it anyway.

Thanks,

Pascal

Re: Connecting to VNC before loggin on [In reply to]

Hi,

first of all an indication: there are two password to configure in VNC, a "system
level" password and a "user level" password. A "system level" password is used before a
"windows user logon" (VNC used like a windows service), a "user level" pasword is used
after a "windows user logon". To setup both the password you have to use from the "Start"
menu:
* RealVNC\VNC Server 4 (Service-Mode)\Configure VNC Service
* RealVNC\VNC Server 4 (User-Mode)\Configure User-Mode Settings

Bye,
Claudio.

Claudio,

FYI, this is not true of VNC 4 series servers.

Pascal,

You should check that VNC Server is correctly installed as a system service,
running under the LocalSystem account and set to Automatic startup. If all
those are the case then it may be that third-party firewall software is
causing problems. It can also be the case that Windows takes a minute or two
after boot-up to get around to starting some services!

RE: Connecting to VNC before loggin on [In reply to]

James, Claudio,

Thanks for the feedback. It's the weirdest thing. First of all, it's true,
you have to give Windows some time to start the service. I've done some more
experimenting and what I discovered is that when I boot up my machine and
Windows is waiting at the login screen, I can't connect succesfully to VNC
on the first attempt. When I try a second time, it works. This is weird, but
at least it's workable.

Regards,

Pascal
