SSH tunneling

Hey guys.
I had some questions earlier about port 80/firewall problems..
The problem was that I wanted to use VNC server on my computer at home (behind
a router) and access it from work (behind an firewall/proxy I don't control).
I tried port 80, 8080 (which the proxy use), neither worked. Anyway:
Now I've managed to reach my computer at home using cliser (SSH client), so
I've
created a tunnel thru the proxy at work and I get to the auth screen. However,
my
password don't work. I can log in just fine if there's no proxy/firewall in
between (had
a friend try it out.)
So I'm thinking.. could it be that because the proxy at work requires
username/password
that I can't login? Is there anyway to fix this?
I know it's using user/pass because I tried telnetting thru the tunnel, but I
got an "invalid username / password" kind of message.

Is there any way to get past this? Perhaps different ports? 80 or 443?
I didn't try 80 or 443 with the tunneling yet, but since the proxy uses 8080
that's what
I should use, huh?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Magnus

RE: SSH Tunneling [In reply to]

No, it's not. If you want a free VNC that has built in encryption, you
should check out UltraVNC. It is located at http://www.ultravnc.com.
It's based upon the oder VNC 3 source code but it works great.

I should probably mention that it's only Windows based. :) Unless
someone else knows of one, I don't think that there is a free *NIX based
VNC server/client that has integrated encryption.

If you want to set up a SSH server on each computer to tunnel VNC,
here's a link:

RE: SSH Tunneling [In reply to]

Not built-in. However, there are instructions on how to use PuTTY to tunnel
here: http://www.benjamin.weiss.name/putty-tunnel.html
I've used this several times to build an encrypted tunnel to my machine at
home over the internet and it works just fine. One caveat...if you're trying
to tunnel *to* a Windows machine, you'll have to find and install a Windows
SSH server, as Windows does not come with SSH.

RE: SSH Tunneling [In reply to]

Kausar,

VNC Free Edition runs over standard TCP/IP sockets, and so can be tunnelled
via SSH or any equivalent mechanism.

Regards,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.
