-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

I have sucessfully setup vnc on my own machine which is a Redhat 5 system.
While trying to set it up on my uncle's machine however which is basically
identical, I'm running into the following error when starting up the server:

(taken from X.log)
rfbInitSockets: listening on TCP port 5901
httpInitSockets: listening on TCP port 5801
AUDIT: Mon Apr 27 13:44:01 1998: 885 Xvnc: client 1 rejected from IP
127.0.0.1 port 21764

Some background info: The machine i'm setting up for him is on 192.168.1.4
and my machine is on 192.168.1.2.

Any ideas? The server just shows a blank grey screen...no windows
manager..no xterm..

Hi Melissa,

The following errors defined in the log below seem to only happen for

users who belong to 1 group. Not sure why this is. Does the user need

any special access? Has anyone been able to help you with this problem?

The contents of the log file are:
_XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: failed to bind listener
_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for
local

Fatal server error:
Failed to establish all listening sockets

Also what kind of operating system do I use to connect to my friend's

RE: VNC [In reply to]

Dear Cindy,

VNC is only a management tool. So VNC won't allow you to use file and
printer sharing, but if you can make a vnc connection, you should also be
able to share printers and so...

But, if you connect through the internet; there is a great danger that
someone may hack into your computer, and then you need a firewall / vpn to
use printer sharing through the internet.

If you send me your detailled configuration, I'll be happy to explain
several things.

Hey,
Try changing the twm in xstartup to dtwm. this is the dt windows manager.

Or you could use the -query option. To get the dtlogin screen.

Hi:

I connect to my Unix VNC server and I just see a grey desktop with a cursor.
I looked at the FAQ page and could not figure out what to do. I'm usnig
Exeec to connect to a SUN workstation using fvwm2 Xwindow manager. I
launched vncserver via Exceed and telnet, it did not make a difference. I
linked my ./.vnc/xstartup to my .Xdefaults, it didn;t change either. This is
what I had in xstartup originally:

#!/bin/sh

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
twm &

I changed the last line to fvwm2 and realized no difference either. I do not
have .Xresourses in my home area. I'm enclosing the .files from my home area
for furthur debug. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Regards,

- Abbas

RE: VNC [In reply to]

Hello all. Can VNC be used from a web browser. I have a server at work and
want to access this from my system at home, but without dialing into my VPN
tunnel, I cannot access the server. I read somewhere that this can be setup
to access through a standard web browser. Does anyone know what the
procedures are to set this up?

Thanks

RE: VNC [In reply to]

First of all, you have to ensure that your VNC server is not running on a machine that is using an internal IP address, meaning those that cannot be access outside your VPN. Then, with your server running, type the following in the URL of your browser :

http://my_machine_IP:5801

Assumption :
VNC normally uses 5801 for the HTTP port of unix machines, if you are using windows, then it is likely to be 5800.

this should work. What you will first see if a gray screen with an authenication textbox, then when the correct password has been entered, you should see the screen of your network computer.

Don't hesitate to ask!!!

Cheang,

I have used your suggestion successfully from Linux to Windows and between
Windows systems, but cannot get it to work from Windows to linux. I get a
'File not Found' message on the screen.

Any Ideas as to why?

Did you configure your home xp machine to have VNC server run as a service?
Maybe that part got left out and needs to be started.

Don't worry too much now. 4.1.1 had a known exploit.
http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/433994
If you've upgraded, you should be good to go.

But just in case, here are some ideas:

Tunnel it over SSH http://www.erikjheels.com/vnc-over-ssh.html

Use non standard ports
http://www.tweakxp.com/article37251.aspx

Restrictive firewall ACL's that grant access to small selection of known
originating IP's

Hamachi
http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/Software_Utilities/Remote_Control_Anoth
er_PC_Securely_with_VNC_and_Hamachi.html
http://www.hamachi.cc/

VPN
Check out SSL-Explorer. It has a VNC plugin.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sslexplorer/

And of course,

Complex passwords.

Cheers!
