what does plugin omstdout do (using 6.2.2 on ubuntu)

I'm still confused about what omstdout needs to work and what I should see.
I think the plugin just relays all messages to stdout.
I'm running rsyslog -c5 -n (and saw omstdout is present with lsof -p <pid>)
I'm using rsyslog 6.2.2 on ubuntu 11.04
When I just do:
%logger testing
I would assume "testing" would be echoed to stdout. Its not.
I understood omstdout doesn't do anything "useful" but I just want to see
something working under my command.
Is there anything special I need at configure time or runtime?
