For Layer-2 I recommend Allied Telesyn. They have a Model called 8326GB, which is 24*100BaseTX + 2 * 1000BaseTX and Two GBIC Slots (unpopulated), which "replace" the 1000BaseTX Ports when populated. You get from them all you expect from switch with management (telnet interfacce, web interface, MIBs) except that it does *not correctly* account VLAN traffic. I think that's a flaw in many switches. They are other models out with more or less ports. I recommend the Layer-2 ones from AT, but neccesarily the Layer-3 Switches from AT. (Gunther may tell us more about AT's dying BGP sessions, processor overload and other oddities).
