Sorry,_no_mailbox_here_by_that_name._(#5.1.1)

I can't get local deliveries to work for a user.

grep Univmass /etc/passwd
Univmass:x:2972:15:The Man:/ssa1/home/U/Univmass:/bin/csh

grep Univmass assign
=Univmass:Univmass:2972:15:/ssa1/home/U/Univmass:::
+Univmass-:Univmass:2972:15:/ssa1/home/U/Univmass:-::

User's home directory exists, is empty and owned by the user with 755
perms. The permissions are all 755 on all the parent directories as well.

Any clue on what is going on here?

Probably chittalocal.

qmail lowercases the username. If you created a user with any uppercase in
it, it won`t work.

Check and make sure the username created is ALL lower case.

Use vipw to change it if this is the case (pun intended).

Send mail to the account again, hopefully, that will solve the problem.

Aagh, I see. You are limited to 8 characters in the username. If you send
a mail to chitta_l it will very likely go through (try it please).

Solutions...I don`t know. Have you checked the archives or would someone
else want to comment.

What OS are you using ?

That is probably not the problem:
$ id
uid=5002(chitta_local) gid=501(chitta_local) groups=501(chitta_local)

The "chitta_local" mailbox, of course. In this sense, a mailbox is the
part of an address left of the at-sign (@). This error means that
chitta_local isn't a valid user or alias.

The first question is whether you're using the qmail-users
facility. If so, what's in your assign file?

If that's not the problem, look at qmail-getpw. What does the
following say:

/var/qmail/bin/qmail-getpw chitta_local | tr '\0' '\n'

The qmail-getpw man page explains the criteria that a user account
must meet in order to be a valid mail user.

But what is the file/directory that is not being found?
I am probably dealing with the simplest of all cases -- a user sending mail
to himself.

BTW...
$ grep chitta_local /var/qmail/users/assign
=chitta_local:chitta_local:5002:501:/users/chitta_local:::
+chitta_local-:chitta_local:5002:501:/users/chitta_local:-::

I don't know whether this is normal.
These lines got in there without my doing.

Hmm. Maybe you have qmail-pw2u/qmail-newu hooked into your
adduser/useradd somehow. Who installed qmail? How?

OK, looks good. However, since chitta_local is listed in assign, that
information will be used--provided cdb is up-to-date. However again,
the assign information is the same as the qmail-getpw information, so
it may not matter.

Bruce Guenter's qmail-1.03+patches SRPM includes the above in an hourly cron
job. That's a likely candidate.

Local users are receiving mails now.
But NIS users are not receiving mails.
Instead NIS users get the following problem in the log:
deferral: Temporary_error_on_maildir_delivery._(#4.3.0)
What problem is this?

I assume from what you posted that all NIS users' home directories are
on an automounted NFS partition, while local users are stricly housed on
the local hard disk?

Could be a lot of things, mostly connected with NFS. Check your system
logs to see if there's any NFS-related failures, or any other indication
why writes to those maildirs fail.
