Qmail - domains with multiple servers and the priority server is down

Hello,
When qmail server sends an e-mail for a domain with multiple servers, if MX
priority server is down messages are not delivered to the secondary server
and the user receives a message:

Connected to x.x.x.x but connection died. (# 4.4.2)
I'm not going to try again, this messages has been in the queue too long.

The solution I have adopted is to insert a line in the file
/var/qmail/control /smtproutes indicating the secondary server for that
domain.

How should I configure qmail server to automatically forward the message to
the second server when the primary server is not responding?

That's incorrect. qmail does indeed deliver to the lower-priority MXes if the
highest-priority one is down. The word "down" is important.

If x.x.x.x is the primary MX, the problem here is that the primary MX *wasn't
down*. It was accepting connections. qmail will not try to connect to the
lower-priority MXes when it can connect to the highest-priority one.

The receiving domain is broken. The mail isn't getting through due to
administrator error; try contacting the postmaster there.
