smtp "on the fly" DATA compression

Hi list,

Is there any way to enable compression in Qmail? I know that in
qmail-ldap patch exists this characteristic, but would like to implement
this function to make compressed transfer between servers of my network
wan, however without implementing full ldap-patch.

Any ideas?

Use TLS - IIRC the encryption process also compresses the data, which
should solve your bandwidth issue. The current TLS patch supports both
client and server side TLS, and qmail-remote will do it automatically if
the remote server advertises STARTTLS. You can also use self-signed certs
without a problems, so there's no need to spend money on SSL certs either.

1) Please don't top-post.

2) The solution to that is simple - don't use fixcrio :) Seriously, why
do you use it? There's no good reason to do so at this point, the mail
servers that don't properly send messages these days are so few and far
between that bouncing the occasional message from them shouldn't be ab
issue. And, if that's really a problem on your external gateways, it
shouldn't be one on your internal systems - just set up separate instances
of qmail-smtpd without fixcrio for sending mail on the WAN...
