Problem when alias contains a hyphen and is similar to basename

Hi Friends,

today a customer brought a nice issue to my attention :)

I have a postbox called john.smith-meiers [at] domain
I created an alias line
john.smith [at] domain > john.smith-meiers [at] domain

Immediately mails to both addresses start looping. As far as I
understand the problem the part right of the hyphen is stripped of and
so both address look the same. I dont know exactly it this is a feature
of qmail itself or one of the patches. I am running a netqmail/vpoopmail
toaster based on the gentoo patches, which includes the BigTODo, TLS and
qmail-spp.

I am overseeing something or is this a kind of conceptual problem?

is there a ~vpopmail/domains/example.com/john.smith-meiers/.qmail file ?

or a ~vpopmail/domains/example.com/.qmail-john.smith-meiers ?

In article <4CCFD7F0.1030308 [at] oliwel> you write:

Have you taken into account that a .qmail file for john.smith is
called .qmail-john:smith, not .qmail-john.smith ?

Even though this is not the vpopmail list, I took a quick look at
the vpopmail source and it does the same colon substitution.

R's,
John

Qmail converts . to : when looking for .qmail files.
You'd want /var/alias/.qmail-john:smith-meiers

Neither one - I forgot to mention that I am using vpopmail-mysql backend
and I have all the names in the database "as is", so no substitution or
anything else.
The problem is not the Dot, but the hyphen...
