Slackware and Daemontools

I followed the much reviled Qmailrocks guide, years ago, to build a mail server. I was 50 years-old when someone told me what Unix and Linux were, so be gentle. Since then, I have spent some time at the LWQ site and actually have something of a clue as to what is going on.....(finally). Anyway, I did all of this using Slackware and there has always been an issue (for me, anyway) with the way in which Slackware starts daemontools. In that Linux distribution your instructed to add a line to the /etc/inittab (something like SV12345:svscanboot:respwan: etc - I can't recall the syntax from memory) and it's always been a bit buggy. It usually works, sometimes it doesn't. There some info at LWQ that says the line needs to be placed before the X11 section, or something, but I could put it anywhere and it still periodically would not work. After building a mail server on Slackware12.1, recently, it almost never worked. I finally just wrote an executable
script, like "/usr/local/bin/svscanboot & >/dev/null" and called the script by adding a line to the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file.

It may sound idiotic (I'm sure it does) but is there anything about this that would cause a problem..? It appears to work just fine but maybe it's wrong. Is this an offense that could be prosecutable in some jurisdictions? It works - should I just say "wahoo" and take a nap?

Thanks for any input/output (that's computer jargon)

That's quite unusual, putting things in inittab is a quite well-supported
way of starting services. Do you see anything in the logs when it fails?

No, it's fine, except that it won't be automatically restarted if it fails,
which putting it in inittab would do.

Well I'll be, somebody else using qmail in Flint. Shoot me an email if I
can be of help, I'll meet you at Good Beans and we'll sort it out. :-)

I recall having had this same problem and coming up with this same
solution; I assumed it was a max-line-length issue and never thought
about it again;

actually the problem (IIRC) was NOT intermitent; and it was a Debian
box;
